    Isn't matchbook alive and kicking?

You can never get down at exchanges, that's the real problem.

You have to creat your own liquidity to draw in money, it's not worth it.

I used to know when playing at the local OTB a heavy hitter that ONLY bet Favorites. LOL... He wasn't a winner of course, but there are others that seem to want "the favorite" in their triple or other type exotics. If this becomes mainstream, I wonder how or even if they will show the money bet at particular odds on the toteboard. Maybe I'm missing some details here.

The money bet at fixed odds would not go into the tote pool.
I would guess that the books would pay a track a certain sum based on total handle separately, but it would not be reflected in the tote pool.
Having a few accounts open in the UK, I cn tell you that right now, I can bet fixed odds on almost all usa tracks and races each day. The odds I get are often 30-40% better than I can get at track odds, oftentimes even more on favorites if I get on early in the day.
I've often got 2/1 early about horses that go off at 1/5 on track.

And this is why they can market and grow over time.

It's all about the marketing and availability.

I have accounts at willhill, bet365, skybet, betfred and betdaq the exchange from ladbrokes.

You can view the odds available at all uk sites for usa races each day at oddschecker.com
Odds for US tracks are generally available a couple of hours before the days racing starts (approx 10am eastern time)

Betfair and orbitx a broker offer in-play access to some us tracks.

Those are "supposed" sites that I have access to and that are funded, plenty of other sites in the uk offering fixed odds on usa tracks daily. Many of the USA firms that are now opening into markets in the USA are part of or have access to these market makers odds.

Fandual owns flutter entertainment, which in turn owns Paddy Power, Betfair, PokerStars, Sky Bet, Sportsbet, FOX Bet, FanDuel, TVG, timeform and Adjarabet

GVC Holdings is the parent company of betmgm, bwin, Ladbrokes, Coral, Betdaq, and sportingbet amongst others.

    Caesars Entertainment owns williamHill.

Most of the USA betting sites have acquired interests in the uk, those uk sites already provide fixed odds on USA racing, the transition to such over here should be quick and easy.

Understood and thanks but how do you gain access to these UK sites from the US?

Odsy88 for Orbitx or Brokerstorm for Whitehorse/Orbitx. They both offer Pinny to. The Betfair US tracks are limited but during summer months it is peak time for them and UK tracks are all in full swing too. Every US horse player should have at least an account with Odsy88 for Orbitx plus you can have Pinny. Getting locked in at 2-1 when you see the last flash as gates open your horse drop to 3/5 on US tote is an amazing feeling if he does win. Its also sick how fast the payouts are 24/7 via BTC . Even if you never want to deposit into an exchange having it up to see what the true odds are is a great tool IMO

This is much more difficult. I am originally English, moved here 20 yrs ago. I still have uk documentation. Driving licence, passport, bank accounts etc. I visit three or four times per year for several weeks at a time. (Or did pre-covid)

Nowadays I mostly use third party accounts of friends and family. Though vpn does give you access, some bookies (bet365 especially) will block connection if they sniff out vpn's and will make it much more difficult to withdraw.

I now remote-in to a laptop I have setup over there so that the connections to the uk site are via genuine uk ip address and get the money down that way.

It's not nearly as easy as it used to be, hopefully it will not be needed for much longer.

Where there is a will, there is a way.

USA residents could not bet on sports up until relatively recently, and yet here we all are.

Offshore, third party accounts, vpn's, Bitcoin, agents/broker accounts. There will always be a way if there is a desire.

Fixed odds certainly make the game beatable, or at the very least, they make it much more of a fair fight.

Such a shame because I'd beat these fixed odds markets thoroughly. I just don't want to risk not getting paid. Once this becomes prominent within the US, the sharps will take advantage quickly.

Unfortunately, your accounts will be restricted quickly too.
Once you are profiled as someone who has the slightest idea what you are doing, your account will be restricted to betting pennies and they will let you know that your business is no longer welcome.
Winners are most definitely not wanted.

Same way as any in-play sport works. Odds update constantly as the race takes place until they cross the finish line.
I find the best way to make money from in-play is to look for closers and take them in the first couple of furlongs out the gate when they are 12 lengths back off the lead and the odds are ~ 30% better than they were as they left the gate.

If you are also able to Lay, then you can look for early speed horses and back them before the gate opens and then lay them off once they ping the gate and sprint to an early lead.

Of course pace maps are not always accurate, so a plan B is always a good idea.

I can imagine my bet icon spinning and only very likely losers actually going through, such a short time to both bet and have the book confirm. Is it being done at any US facing sportsbooks now?

There are so many UK books that offer this fixed odds wagering but none of the other offshore/US facing sites do. I don't know why this is. I keep hoping that one will emerge.

"Why fixed odds wagering looks like a real winner for American racing"

Fixed odds, at least in the early stages, will be generally only taken on win, place and show bets. Exotic bets such as trifectas, superfectas, Pick 3, 4, 5 and 6 will be difficult to risk-manage. However, currently win, place and show wagering comprise approximately 30 percent of all bets on a race card. The takeout rate on fixed odds wagering will be approximately 12 percent, which is a substantial improvement on current straight-bet rates, which ranges between 15 and 18 percent. The reduction in the takeout of the fixed odds bet means there will be less money available to rebate to the higher-volume bettors, which may discourage the high-volume player from playing in the straight pools. This should result in better payoffs for the casual bettor.

I don't know why, but somehow I doubt this will pass in other states as quickly as NJ. I mean those that don't bet horse racing say, "hey you allready have legal betting on horse racing". It's not the same issue to them as sports betting. Fixed odds would be GREAT. I bet 3 winners yesterday in horse racing. They were all 8-5 or better on the morning line and each paid under 1-1. I hope NJ's example will travel fast and work well in the garden state.

It would be nice to see Betfair have another crack at things now that betting is opening up in most states.
In-Play is still the end goal for me. Just now hit - Finger Lakes - Race 4 - #5 Smart Broad.
    Track odds 2/5 (1.45). I got some on @ 3.25 in-play with Orbitx.

If Betfair were to be approved with customers/liquidity from all 50 states, it would be a smashing success. So would fixed odds racing.
