The problem in the US is that the unprotected aren't really intermingled with the vaccinated, there are swaths of the country just ripe for an uptick in cases, hospitalizations, and deaths.

I'm in a blue state, God help me, but that means I really don't need to get vaccinated, everyone else already did, but some of those states will undoubtedly have local pressure on their health care systems.
