He wore a silk shirt and kept a slight scent of cologne about him. He liked to talk. There was always someone to talk to, like the production assistant from Los Angeles who blew $1,200 on video poker. They all brought their stories to the 40-foot marble bar at the Rio hotel, and later to a less glamorous joint a few miles from the Strip.
It was a good life, and through the years, Bernard Sykes met Hollywood actresses and local characters, professional athletes including Mike Tyson, and first-time visitors to the United States. Sometimes, as customers swigged beers and sipped martinis, sharing the kind of intimacies told only to strangers, they’d slide a $100 bill across the counter as a tip.

I'm at the Suncoast right now; business is nowhere near what is was two years ago. Vegas might be in serious trouble.

Strip casinos like MGM and Caesars had such a monopoly that the jobs there were not worth having, most employees had to work two jobs at two different casinos because benefits were cut along with wages.
Making virtually all of their employees part-time to avoid having to pay subsidies and benefits was just one of the slimy tactics used by large casinos.
This is what happens when you let two companies take over Las Vegas. Even if vegas resurges the resorts will just go back to gouging and robbing their employees.

I think this is what's happens when you have a union lol

Seems to be the same story, for every union, except the public employees unions...

I think I misunderstood your post mini, did you mean to say this is what happens when you don’t have a union?

Gaming dealers in Vegas are unionized, as are servers and restaurant employees.

Their financial woes lay in the fact they cannot market themselves or their skills independently...but instead give all their earning potential over to a select few who decide what they settle for.

I have 0 sympathy for it.

Yes the souring real estate market, It's like an atomic sourball. Man if only the first statement were true. I see more cars with TX or CO or MN plates here every day.

I wish you had read my post before commenting. Those are for full-time employees, which are scarce if not completely absent from strip casinos.

    Hold on...

Are you telling me that Union shops are allowing the hiring of part time non union workers aka open shop?

No fukkin way there's more than a minute % of 'on call' labor allowed.

Negotiated too many of these contracts to know how that's played.

I'd imagine the non union hotels (I think Sands LV is non union) probably make more money but get less benefits.

I read where a lot of places are having a hard time filling job openings.

Seems people don't want to go back to their old jobs now.

Everyone I talk to says Vegas is crowded. This last weekend it was popping up and down the strip.

Pent up demand going to provide a little boom.

Summer is the off season for Vegas. The next several months figures to be a struggle. The economy needs to get rolling again for things to get back to normal. In addition Vegas is over developed to begin with. I don't see a rush for jobs that will be part time or on call in the immediate future. The job market should increase in fall. With the Raiders in town some weekends will create some major traffic. Until then all bets are off.
