Is it worth it to try to have an undefeated season???

It's not anyone's goal to win them all before the season starts and its NOT worth the pressure of taking an undefeated team into the postseason. Its just not worth it. A championship is a championship with 5 losses or zero losses.

    So lose on purpose...?

Good luck getting anyone to agree with that (coaches, players etc)

Of course it is; you don't play to lose.

The NCAA has awarded a trophy to a champion every year except last year since the Hoosiers went undefeated whether the team was undefeated or not. A championship is a championship no matter the amount of loses. Just don't lose in the tournament. No brownie points for going undefeated.

so you are just saying a team should lay down and take a loss if they are gonna be undefeated?

Not lay down and take a loss, but not sweat it if they do lose a game. Who goes balls to wall an entire season?? The Bulls and Warriors lost 10 and 9 games respectively. Winning them all is not a big deal, finishing the deal is a big deal if you win a championship. Just unnecessary pressure to be undefeated an entire season AND postseason.

It's basically impossible for an NBA team to win every single game. Bulls and Warriors actually did go balls to wall the entire season going for the record

For the Warriors, it ended up costing them a championship

Pretty sure they played in a weak ass conference and had an easy road in the tourney to the championship

Its kinda hard to just “lose” when you are way better than every team you’ve played thus far

Then you get exposed in the championship by the best team you’ve played, simple as that

No way could I coach a team with a let’s lose this game mentality
    Not sure about players
but a coach as a leader would be really taxing on the soul

I don’t see a correlation between being undefeated and it’s negative impact in winning a championship. Would Gonzaga be the champion today if they had lost a game in February? Or Baylor was the better team all along(they certainly dominated the final four)

Alabama won the championship being undefeated this year because they were great. The bulls easily won the championship when they had the 70 win season while Golden State fell one game short(in hindsight, that team overachieved in the regular season or the competition was subpar).

there was talk of Gonzaga playing Baylor on a neutral floor earlier this season when each team had large gaps in their schedules due to covid cancellations but nothing ever came of it

    Nope

    Baylor was the better team

They could’ve got undefeated very easily without the Covid issues

They didn't lose because of the pressure from being undefeated, Baylor was the better team. Gonzaga needs to fill out their roster with more athletic bigs if they want a shot to win next year.

Was that Gonzaga’s off night or just a Baylor steamroll??

You learn much more from a loss than a win. Especially when you have a team of players that think they are better than everyone else. A coach doesn't need a loser mentality but a good coach will find ways to put players in stressful situations that are not always the best position to win, especially in games that really don't matter. That's how your team grows. If it's always easy, then they will never know what it's like when it gets tough. You want a team that is battle tested. Sports is emotional.

Gregg Popovich once said that his greatest lesson as a coach was a total beatdown in Div III game. The Florida Gators looking to do something it's never done (go undefeated in a season), lost a game at home. This led Tim Tebow to make a promise that he and the team would work hard as they could. They ended up winning the rest of their games and won a national championship. I'm totally convinced that if they did not lose that game, they would not have won a title. They were coasting until they lost.

Added pressure. All the teams have a level of pressure. Favorites and undefeateds have exponentially more pressure than a team that just needs to win a game

Zags had very little competition until the tourney and I'd have loved to watch them match up w OSU to ne honest I think that would been just as fun as the UCLA game.

I can't think of a time this year they were really tested. They started their season at the Ft Myers tip off by blowing away fukkin Kansas!

Gonzaga didn’t look as good as frauds last night. Fraud means something close or deceiving. Zags looked like 16 seed last night. Not the number one overall seed.
