Great players typically don't dominate NCAA. Great coaches dominate NCAA. Brad Stevens was dominating it last time I watched. Coaching average players like Hayward & Mack to championships while guys like Wall & Cousins bombed.

Brandon Clarke is the technical answer but most dominant college players don't go number 1

I think he was a late 1st rounder but he was the star of the ncaa 2 years in a row

Khalid El-Amin was a good college player who didn't do much in the NBA after he was selected in the 2nd round but as pointed out he shared the backcourt with Rip Hamilton who turned into a very good NBA player after winning the MOP in the Final Four so its fair to say El-Amin wasn't the best player on his team.

    *off topic*
We (Connecticut) had a 7' 3" center some 12 years ago (Thabeet)
Drafted #2 overall by Memphis, he was an NBA epic failure.
Got mauled in the paint by virtually every opposing pivot man.

I think he's still playing in Asia somewhere.

Wasn't Adam Morrison player of the year and averaged like 30ppg, got Gonzaga to the sweet 16, then cried like a little girl when they lost.

    2003 Top 5

    1) LeBron
    2) Darko Milic
    3) Carmelo Anthony
    4) Bosh
    5) D Wade

Imagine being Detroit, drafting Darko 2nd in this class.

Chicken or the egg? Milicic had size & talent, but Larry Brown never played him so (though I'm skeptical of this in most cases) there is a case to be made it was just a bad situation for the kid. LB later clashed with James & Wade on team USA in Athens btw. He's not a patient man.

Grant Hill led an average team to the finals and lost in the closing moments to a great Arkansas team. That was nearly 30 years ago.

Looks like Johnny Juzang will be added to the list. UCLA looked great against Gonzaga last night and like a defensive monster against Michigan and Bama. The offense was fueled by Juzang. Dominant.

Except that literally EVERY mock draft had him going top 3 that year. Try again though.

While Milicic was a colossal bust, the Pistons probably never win a championship with Anthony, never trade for Rasheed Wallace if they draft Bosh and no one knew Wade was going to be an all-time great.

Besides, who would Detroit have used as their "Human victory cigar", as Bill Laimbeer referred to Darko, had they not wasted the #2 pick on him.

Bonus Fact: Darko isn't even the biggest bust drafted at #2. No, it's not Sam Bowie either.

The worst #2 pick ever is unquestionably Hasheem Thabeet, who was selected over James Harden and Steph Curry. I'd say that's a little worse than Melo and Bosh, maybe even Wade.
