When Aaron pushed aside Babe Ruth’s revered record of 714 – the most famous number in sports -- it ended a quest during which the slugger endured racist hate mail and threats against his life. On the night Aaron broke the record, his bodyguard stood disguised as a fan, ready with a gun hidden in a binoculars case, and police snipers were on the stadium roof, fortunately showing life-saving judgment when two teenagers jumped out of the stands to join Aaron during his trot around the bases.

Sports Illustrated later reported that Aaron received 930,000 pieces of hate mail in 1973.

“These people feel this is going to be a weak part of me,” Aaron said about the hate mail he began to receive when it became apparent he would threaten Ruth’s record. “They think they’ll upset me with their words or their shouts, that they’ll get me where I can’t do the job. This won’t happen. I don’t like it, but I always do my best. This only makes me more determined.”

No. 715 has been called “the home run that changed America.” After Aaron broke the record, his detractors melted away.

    RIP

LT - records are meant to be broken. Barry Bonds, no matter what you think of him, Clemens, Mark McGwire, Pete Rose, what have you, earned every record they hold. I'm especially annoyed by MLBs treatment of the steroids era. There were no rules on steroids by MLB. They didn't care. Baseball was dead. Steroids saved baseball. These holier than thou fukks won't ever say it but we all know Steroids saved baseball. Hell, more pictures were juicing than the hitters. Bonds didn't have to juice, he resisted it longer than most but watching all these other guys who were not anyway as talented as he was get all the accolades and for MLB to promote it, what was he supposed to do? I saw Bonds before steroids. He was by far the most talented hitter ever. I give a lot of credit to Ken Griffey, who never went the steroid route. That is very tough to do, see average guys like Biggio and Bagwell roid out and get rewarded. Especially when baseball obviously condoned it.

they are saying some people over 80 might be better off not getting the vaccine as the effects it causes in developing antibodies might be too harsh for their bodies to handle. i hope in his case it was just his time and not because of that.
