Why Americans call the Final series "World Series"? It's not even a WORLDwide thing!

    1) The teams in the World Series are usually American or at best Canadian (e.g. Toronto Blue Jays won the "World" Series in 1992 and 1993).

    2) With all due respect Baseball is not even being watched in most countries, in my country the media if there is any relation to American Sports - it's going to be only the NBA which is a much more popular sport and it's called N-BA i.e. National Basketball Association - National and NOT International.

    3) Same applies to NFL, N-FL, the NFL calls the final game/match - Super Bowl - so there you have it - call it with something like this or call it Super Home Run when it comes to Baseball but why call it "WORLD" Series?

    4) I see Baseball is quite popular in Japan - so why not have a REAL world series with American vs Japanese teams?

    5) Bottom line, I think that term must be changed.

All the best players in the world come to America to play baseball numb nuts. Same with every other sport besides soccer pretty much. So when the champs are the best team in the world it’s fair to call them world champs.

So what should we call the world cup then? "Super kick a ball around game" because America pretty much doesn't give a fuk about it.

I see the OPs point. The major sports leagues should have a game after the championship is decided and invite the best team in the world that is not in their league. Then give them a beat down of epic proportions. They should do the same in soccer too except that would be too much like an actual world cup and put pressure on the world cup to not have a international exhibition.

Are there any football teams in the world other than in Canada and the U.S.? The point may be lost there because the world rather play kick ball than a modern day gladiator sport with strategy.

japanese superstars aspire to play in the MLB. amercian superstars don't aspire to play in Japan.

same with the Latin America Countries. the best of the best play in the MLB. it is all nationalities, not just "American" (whatever that would mean anyway).

A newspaper called " The world" sponsored the original series in the 1880s.

Then when they revived the series just after 1900 they kept the name.

    The baseball is a sphere.
    The earth is a sphere.
Therefore the World Series is the apporpriate name for two items that have the same shape.

For many years, it was believed that the name came from the fact that the original series was sponsored by the New York World Telegram newspaper, thus becoming known as the ‘World’s Series’. However, popular as this explanation may be, it’s not actually true and although the newspaper did report the results of the games, it had nothing to do with the naming of the competition.

The real reason behind the name is thanks to Barney Dreyfuss who was the owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1903, he wrote to the owner of the Boston Red Sox challenging them to a ‘World’s Championship Series’. The Pirates were the best team in the National League and the Red Sox were the best in the American League.

The games went ahead and Boston won the series five games to three. Over time, the 'World’s Championship Series' name has been shortened to the World Series and has been played every year apart from 1904 and 1994.
