Is Hopkins for Johnson the worst trade in NFL history?

Let's revisit the trade with a top 3 receiver in the entire nfl being traded for a decent running back.

Is Bill O Brien the biggest dumbass?

And then you have people saying it's all about the money. Cooks and Johnson combined are making more than Hopkins and neither are difference makers.

    Clown show organization.

No I still think the worst trade ever made at least in my lifetime was the Herschel Walker trade where the Dallas Cowboys basically built a dynasty by trading away Walker and stocking up on draft picks that turned into guys like Emmitt Smith and Darren Woodson among others that built the team of the 90's and fleeced the Vikings in the process.

I think it was more of a salary dump by the Texans. Obviously they knew Hopkins was much better player but they didn't wanna pay him like the Cardinals did.

But it wasn't a salary dump? They are paying cooks and Johnson more.

Cardinals will do anything and pay anything to get 5-7 wins. They are the Lions West.

When two great football minds like Bill O'Brien and Cliff Kingsbury get together there are bound to be fireworks. You know, the kind of fireworks that accidentally burn down 100,000 acres in a gender reveal party.

I guess I look at it like this... Texans and Cardinals probably both get the same end result with our without these guys so it’s a wash. AZ got the better statistical player but they weren’t going to pay the guy. Instead they are paying Johnson his cash. Makes little sense but again- same result at the end of the day.

Speaking of great football minds I'm wondering if the rams are cap exempt.

    Agreed, really bad trade.

The Ricky Williams trade was another bad one. Ditka gave up his entire draft that year I believe.

Can’t argue that. Picks would have been much better. You’d think they could have got a haul of picks.

Snead is like a gambler who stole 22k from his uncle's attic and is just hoping to hit a big money line dog so that he can repay the money and have something to play with.

Maybe not the worst trade but Bill O’Brien is one of the worst coaches. I’ve never seen a coach do so little with so much. He should be arrested on fraud, impersonating a football coach.

Pretty much. He also traded your 1st round picks so you more difficult to restock with young talent.

Yeah no doubt. I was actually going to point that out as the bigger flaw in his strategy. The Rams do well in the draft in the later rounds but he's really handicapped the team on a few of these deals. Of course the notion is that there are no Jalen Ramsey's in the draft so you spend the picks on the known talent. It doesn't take into account the cap space you save by having young guys under contract. Anyways this thread is really about Bill O

Hard to do little with so much when you trade away all your good players minus your qb.

They looked like they could use some help at oline and receiver last night hmmm.

Champ Bailey for Clinton Portis looked bad initially too. Give the trade some time. DHop might regret not having Desean throw to him the next 4-5 years versus the little tiny Heisman winner.

depends on how this year goes. If Hopkins doesn't produce and Johnson does, then it was a good trade.

what about Sanu for a 2nd rounder? its not the worst but they got 8 games out of him, 200 yards, 1 td and then cut him. Great trade for the Falcons.

Hopkins contract demands would have extremely hamstringed their salary cap for several years. David Johnson only dos it for one year. A good point was brought up that only teams with a first contract quarterback would have been able to afford Hopkins long term. That cuts the suitors considerably. Situation would have been worse if they held onto him and he sat out training camp. O'Brien would have really had a problem getting rid of him then.

It’s not fair to grade the trade based on the quality of the players because Hopkins is the much more expensive player than Johnson. The trade wasn’t made because Houston thought Johnson is as good as Hopkins, it was made because Houston couldn’t afford Hopkins, Johnson’s contract is much cheaper.

Ok so in that sense you would rather have Trubisky than Mahomes because he's cheaper? There is a reason he is worth more because he makes a difference.

You are missing the point. Houston couldn’t afford Hopkins they probably won’t even keep Johnson after this year since it’s easy to draft running backs anyways, the trade was a salary cap move not a statement about the relative value of the players.

It was a dumb as penetrate trade.

Getting rid of the best or at least top 3 WR in the league Is ridiculous. You have to find a way to pay for top talent. Cap be damned.

Not to mention what you could have gotten for him. I'd bet you could get a good haul of assets for a top 3 WR.

Instead they got an aging and injury prone RB.
