The NBA and its players association have reportedly agreed on social justice messages that can be displayed on the back of jerseys.


ESPN's Marc Spears revealed the news.

The list of the approved suggested social messages, per the source, for the back of the NBA jerseys: Black Lives Matter; Say Their Names; Vote; I Can't Breathe; Justice; Peace; Equality; Freedom; Enough; Power to the People; Justice Now; Say Her Name; Sí Se Puede (Yes We Can); Liberation; See Us; Hear Us; Respect Us; Love Us; Listen; Listen to Us; Stand Up; Ally; Anti-Racist; I Am A Man; Speak Up; How Many More; Group Economics; Education Reform; and Mentor.

The 29 different messages are intended to help keep the focus on topics such as police brutality and systemic racism. Last week, the NBA and NBPA agreed that shedding light on these issues will be a shared goal of the 2019-20 season restart in Orlando.


“The league and the players are uniquely positioned to have a direct impact on combating systemic racism in our country, and we are committed to collective action to build a more equal and just society,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said. “A shared goal of our season restart will be to use our platform in Orlando to bring attention to these important issues of social justice."

Plaza, I think you are correct here. I don't really understand this. Certainly, I am all for free speech but they will further alienate a ton of their fans. I don't want to tell them to shut up and play but why not do all of this outside the business of the NBA schedule, bubble, etc... Would any of you bring a protest into your workplace? HELL NO. They already have huge platforms they can have their management team, handlers and entourage manage. These guys just have so much money they think they are invincible. That money is heavily tied to viewership, ticket sales, shoes, sponsors, etc... by paying customers who do not look like them and probably do not feel comfortable here.

Jimmy Butler won’t get his wish to wear no name on the back of his jersey during the NBA restart.

Butler said last Tuesday he wanted to wear no name on his nameplate, saying that no name and no message would go back to “who I was.” According to Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press, however, Butler will not be permitted to do so, as the uniform player agreement requires something to be on the back of a jersey.

Butler explicitly said he did not want to wear his own name, so it will be interesting if he chooses one of the pre-approved social justice phrases in light of the decision.

The Heat guard certainly appears ready for the season based on his bubble activities. We just don’t know what will be in the back of his uniform yet.
