I don't get the Yount bandwagon.

Guy literally had 20 years of 150 hits. Was a mediocre outfielder then ok infielder. Just consistent and good...nothing great except the longevity.

Quick quiz: Before Ripken won the MVP in '83, Robin Yount was the best short stop in baseball, who was second best? Maybe Ozzie because of defense. He hit .234, with three homeruns over the five years before that. Trammell hit 28 home runs with a .274 average. During those same years, Yount hit 79 home runs with a .293 average. During those years short stops were such bad hitters, than having a .280 hitter with 20 home runs gave the Brewers a huge advantage. Then he went on to win two MVPs. Defense was not at Ripken or Smith level, but it was far better than Jeter. One of the five best short stops in history when he retired. Who has surpassed him since? A-Rod definitely; maybe Larkin and Jeter.

He had an offer to go to Minnesota, and I think Pittsburgh too (hometown). He was considering going to Minnesota and sling it to Moss and Carter. His body was just shot though and his wife didn't want to move. He never really recovered from that achilles tear. At the end he could hardly make a handoff. They still could have put him in the shotgun and just let him throw it, but his back was messed up as well, which took some of his velocity away.

As a Dolphins fan, I still wish he would have went to the Vikings. I would have rooted for him, even against my own team.

I actually got his autograph the weekend before (or maybe the week before) he retired at some sports memorabilia show in New Brunswick, NJ. I got a jersey and a picture. I remember telling him "Thanks for the Sundays", and he looked back after a second and said "You got it" with that big smile. Then he retired and I was sad. He really fought to the end though.

Musial prob the most under rated baseball player of all time IMO. Another great and under rated player is Yogi Berra. 3 MVPS for Yogi. and only played for the Yankees.

Yount only played 1450 games at short, basically by 1984 he was an outfielder (I'm assuming because the defense was mediocre). Ripkens streak is 2xs as long as that alone.

Now, having a SS that could hit wasn't a novel idea, the Twins had Versailles who smashed 20 hrs and led league in triples 3 years in a row.

Now, had he played 15-20 years at SS I'd agree with this, but the guy spent his last 11 years playing CF/DH/1B. He did win the 2nd MVP in 89 but what a down year for stats...even so Sierra, McGriff or Puckett could have argued they deserved that more.

It's like the big papi argument. Is his 550 hr and career HOF worthy as an exclusive DH? We grade the offense on a curve I believe.

Still a good player, but I'd take Trammel, T Fernandez, Ripken over him fir exclusive SS for any peak 5 year period.

Ernie Banks only played 1100 games at short stop. Pete Rose never played even 1000 games at one position. Majority of Yount's value came as a short stop, and when taking his entire career into account, he was among the very best short stops in history. The only argument you can come up with against that is that he changed positions in his 30s. That doesn't mean he stopped being a good player. He played 600 more games than Trammell.

His MVP in 1989 probably wasn't deserved, but he did have two to three other years he was a top five player in the AL. During Yount's best five consecutive years (80-84), he had a WAR of 35.7, and that includes the strike shortened 1981. What short stops in history have exceeded that? Not Trammell, his best was only 31. Fernandez best was only 23. Even Ripken, who I rate higher than Yount had a five-year high of 35.5, without losing games to a strike. Jeter's best was only 35.3, and again, without a strike.

Also, Yount played only 12 games at first base in his entire career. He played only 137 games at DH, and the majority of those games happened early in his career when he was still a full time short stop. To say he played 1B and DH after moving away from short stop is completely wrong and shows a complete lack of understanding. He played short stop and center field almost exclusively for his entire career.

The David Ortiz comparison is very good. Compared to other DHs from the 2000s, Ortiz probably wasn't a Hall-of-Fame player, especially when Sheffield didn't make it. When compared to short stops from the 70s and 80s, Yount absolutely was a great player, the very best at his position for a while and among the very best in the league. And then he went on to play another 1000+ games as a good center fielder.
