MGM Resorts releases safety plan for reopening casinos

MGM Resorts International has released a seven-point safety plan for reopening its U.S. casinos closed since March because of the coronavirus pandemic.

    "
Preparing for the moment we can reopen our doors, MGM Resorts focused on developing a plan that puts health and safety at the center of everything we do,” acting CEO and President Bill Hornbuckle said in a statement."Our properties will not look the way they used to for a while, and that's not only OK, it's critically important,” Hornbuckle said.

The plan includes employee health screening and temperature checks, masks for all workers, physical distancing, enhanced sanitation and air quality improvements.

It also includes protocols for responding to cases of infected employees or guests and the use of technology to reduce the need to wait in lines, such as contactless hotel check-in.

As with similar plans released by Wynn Resorts, Caesars Entertainment and Las Vegas Sands, MGM will emphasize employee hand-washing, regular cleaning of high-touch areas like door handles and elevator buttons, and social distancing rules.

All employees will also be required to wear protective face masks while at work and some will wear face shields, according to the guidelines. Hand-washing stations will have a “visible presence” throughout each MGM property.

Plastic barriers will be placed at different points inside resorts, and casino floor and restaurant layouts will be altered in some places to encourage social distancing, MGM said.

Every other slot machine will be out of service to further encourage social distancing, the company said. The number of players at table games will be limited per Nevada Gaming Control Board guidelines.

Guests will be offered face masks and will be “strongly encouraged” to wear them. Patrons will also be asked to minimize the amount of time masks are removed to drink beverages and will be encouraged to refrain from eating on the casino floor.

MGM also said it has reviewed its ventilation systems to “identify additional opportunities to enhance their effectiveness” to help mitigate the risk of virus transmission.

State gaming regulators are requiring all casino operators to submit reopening plans.

MGM said it plans to reopen its resorts in phases. In Las Vegas, it plans to open only a couple of its 10 Strip properties initially, most likely the Bellagio and New York-New York, the company has said.

Hornbuckle previously warned that some of the 60,000 MGM Resorts employees furloughed during the pandemic may not be recalled, at least not anytime soon.

“We hoped that a significant portion of our operations would bounce back by the summer. That outlook has continued to evolve as COVID-19 cases spread throughout the world,” Hornbuckle said in a May 5 letter to employees. “Based on the current situation, we now believe that some of our colleagues may not return to work this year.”

Gov. Steve Sisolak in mid-March ordered all casinos and other nonessential businesses closed to help prevent the spread of the virus.

Some businesses were allowed to reopen starting Saturday, but no date has been set for resuming operations at casinos, bars and nightclubs.

As of Monday, Nevada health officials reported more than 6,300 cases of COVID-19 and 312 virus-related deaths.

I can’t imagine drinking and social distancing being a good mix, but good luck. I’m positive people will show up.

They were supposed to do this at least 7 days before opening.

They are ready when their phase comes.

The question is when will they recall even some of those employees.

A link in the OP goes to a story where they mention working to host the NBA at on of the MGM properties...

    https://vegasinc.lasvegassun.com/bus...resorts-reope/

On the sports and entertainment side, Hornbuckle said it would be a “stretch” to think that T-Mobile Arena, partially owned by MGM, would be able to host a large event like a concert in 2020.But he added that MGM has been in ongoing discussions with officials from the NBA and NHL about hosting televised-only events. There have been reports of the NBA finishing its season in Las Vegas.

“We can host some of that, and we are working diligently to do that,” Hornbuckle said.

MGM is also a corporate sponsor for Allegiant Stadium, which is expected to be finished this summer, and has extensive plans for Las Vegas Raiders pre- and post-game festivities around the $2 billion facility.

“As it relates to sports, long-term, Las Vegas will recover,” Hornbuckle said. “But we may see a few games this year without people. We were creating a large pregame tailgate environment outside Mandalay Bay and Luxor, which we have put on hold because it’s our general view that if we’re fortunate to see real fans, it won’t be 65,000.”
That was from May 1st and say Las Vegas Sands and Wynn had already submitted plans.

Sounds downright miserable. Only the ultimate degenerate is gonna show up. I'm sure that will be really fun. What could go wrong. How are they even going to make money like this? I would bet that after a month of this they'll realize they lose less money being closed.

It's just not fun. The fun is in drinking and meeting people and hanging out, etc. I just don't see how this would be fun. Only the most desperate gamblers will rebel, and maybe people who fashion themselves rebels for a couple of days. But its going to be a disaster and will cost casinos a fortune to maintain. Anyone who's been to Vegas knows how it's packed wall to wall and that's how they make money. Take half (at least, probably more) away and they don't make money. They still have most of the foxed costs, plus new ones, will less than half the revenue. It doesn't take a financial whiz to see how this falls flat.

And no shows to go to either, right? What's the entertainment? Virtually no sports, no shows, no conventions, no nothing. Just a bunch of degenerates.

Atlantic City, Tunica, Chicago, Detroit will go bankrupt before Las Vegas. Let's lay off the crack pipe fellas. Macau is back open. LV will reopen. It will downsize. LV has the most casinos of any place in the world. If half of them closed permanently, then LV still has the most casinos in the world. AC and Chicago casinos are in a way worse position than Vegas casinos. Chicago casinos just shelled out huge money to get their sportsbook licenses and now they can't even operate them. Huge losses. IL has one of the most restrictive lockdowns in the country. The casinos there will be closed for several months if not into next year. Huge losses there. Catastrophic.

There's 5 casinos in Chicago. How can you compare to Vegas, which is built on casino volume? Vegas won't go bankrupt. And the casinos will eventually get back, but it won't be for another 18 to 24 months. No way they can operate at any profit in the near future. They might as well shutter for an extended period.
