    More deaths, no benefit from malaria drug in VA virus study




    A malaria drug widely touted by President Donald Trump for treating the new coronavirus showed no benefit in a large analysis of its use in U.S. veterans hospitals. There were more deaths among those given hydroxychloroquine versus standard care, researchers reported.
    The nationwide study was not a rigorous experiment. But with 368 patients, it’s the largest look so far of hydroxychloroquine with or without the antibiotic azithromycin for COVID-19, which has killed more than 171,000 people as of Tuesday.
    The study was posted on an online site for researchers and has been submitted to the New England Journal of Medicine, but has not been reviewed by other scientists. Grants from the National Institutes of Health and the University of Virginia paid for the work.


    Researchers analyzed medical records of 368 male veterans hospitalized with confirmed coronavirus infection at Veterans Health Administration medical centers who died or were discharged by April 11.
    About 28% who were given hydroxychloroquine plus usual care died, versus 11% of those getting routine care alone. About 22% of those getting the drug plus azithromycin died too, but the difference between that group and usual care was not considered large enough to rule out other factors that could have affected survival.
    Hydroxychloroquine made no difference in the need for a breathing machine, either.
    Researchers did not track side effects, but noted hints that hydroxychloroquine might have damaged other organs. The drug has long been known to have potentially serious side effects, including altering the heartbeat in a way that could lead to sudden death.
    Earlier this month, scientists in Brazil stopped part of a hydroxychloroquine study after heart rhythm problems developed in one-quarter of people given the higher of two doses being tested.
    Many doctors have been leery of the drug.
    At the University of Wisconsin, Madison, “I think we’re all rather underwhelmed” at what’s been seen among the few patients there who’ve tried it, said Dr. Nasia Safdar, medical director of infection control and prevention.
    Patients asked about it soon after Trump started promoting its use, “but now I think that people have realized we don’t know if it works or not” and needs more study, said Safdar, who had no role in the VA analysis.
    The NIH and others have more rigorous tests underway.

    I believe the drugs are related in the sense that they are antiviral medications focused on RNA viruses. Did you know that Covid is made of RNA?

    I'm not a chemist, biologist, virologist, and did not stay at a Holiday inn last night, but I believe SBR has a collection of some of the best public health professionals the world has ever seen.     This would be great if the chances of any adverse side effects were nearly non-existent. But it doesn't seem like this is the case. We are stilling trying to determine if the potential benefits outweigh the risks.

    The problem with testing drugs like this is... we have to compare what percentage of people get better on their own vs people taking the drug. We don't know for certain if the drug is helping them get better or if they just got better on their own... like many people do. For instance... let's say you gave 100 people hydroxychloriquine and 100 people you gave nothing. If both groups have a similar recovery rate... why should we assume that the drug is doing anything at all?

    What I am saying is... it's likely we just don't know yet. AND, it appears that there seems to be more risk than what was originally spouted by Trump. It's not like taking a Tylenol for a headache... "maybe it'll work, maybe it won't". There appears to be much more risk with this. And THIS is why the "maybe it'll work, maybe it won't" attitude is not a good one.

    236 out of 368 patients were African American.

    However, hydroxychloroquine, with or without azithromycin, was more likelyto be prescribed to patients with more severe disease, as assessed by baseline ventilatory statusand metabolic and hematologic parameters. Thus, as expected, increased mortality was observedin patients treated with hydroxychloroquine, both with and without azithromycin.

    I swear I think the investment in a medical degree might be worth it these days. Not for actually treating anyone but for becoming a YT star or reality TV personality. You can basically just make shit up and if you have Dr. in front of your name there are millions of retards who just believe what you say without doing any research whatsoever. It's really pretty amazing what a good camera and a conspiracy theory will do for the pocketbook these days.
