Best bets for Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury II 🥊

Best bets for Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury II

    ESPN PLUS ($ MATERIAL)

It's the first Las Vegas boxing extravaganza of 2020. Once again, thankfully, differences between promotional companies have been put aside, and the big rematch is on at the MGM Grand on Saturday evening. It comes in the sport's biggest division, as unbeaten heavyweights Deontay "Bronze Bomber" Wilder and Tyson "Gypsy King" Fury face off in a WBC/lineal title return, which ended in a draw back in December 2018.

This time, the demand for a decisive result is high, and in a contest between puncher and boxer, there is no reason why it can't happen.

American WBC titlist Wilder (42-0-1, 41 KOs) is obviously the puncher, and he will be looking to improve on his previous performance against his English opponent. Wilder had appeared to be befuddled and outboxed by Fury for long periods, yet Wilder scored knockdowns in the ninth and 12th rounds. Wilder, 34, has fought twice since facing Fury, registering KO victories against Luis Ortiz in the seventh and Dominic Breazeale in the opening round. The equalizing power is still there, and that is his key to victory.

On the other hand, lineal champion Fury (29-0-1, 20 KOs) will very much want to eliminate the errors from the first encounter and put on what I believe will be a risk-free display. He will take great heart that he got up from both knockdowns last time, but he will know that preventing them will increase his chances of winning on Saturday. Fury also has had two fights since that bout against Wilder, scoring an easy second-round KO of Tom Schwarz and overcoming the very game Otto Wallin by decision -- despite suffering a nasty cut over his eye. Has the cut healed sufficiently to be a nonfactor?

With nearly 85% of their combined fights ending inside the distance, the stats are misleading because the first fight provides the most evidence of how the second fight should unfold. It is clear that the most likely to score the stoppage win is Wilder, while equally the most likely winner by decision will be Fury. In their past three contests, including their first fight against each other, Fury has won 17 of the 25 completed rounds he has contested (68%), yet Wilder has only won 4 of 18 (22%).

Taking all that into account, even though Wilder won his past two contests by knockout, he showed an increase in patience and improvements in technique, setting up the opportunity to land his famed right hand much more than he used to. Previous elements of unpredictability are much fewer and farther between. This newfound desire to set up the winning howitzer of a punch could prove to be Wilder's undoing, as Fury will be content to outbox Wilder like last time, showing feints and mobility and landing scoring punches while using his height and reach advantages to leave it difficult for his opponent to get punches off. If Fury applies 100 percent concentration for the entire fight, he should leave no doubt in the judges' minds who the verdict should be given to.

Pick: This is not a fight for a big gamble, as the books have most areas of interest covered. Caesars' price for Fury to win at +105 is fair and worth a small play, as is their price of +120 for over 10.5 rounds. The same market is -110 in the United Kingdom, and one book in the United States is as low as -125.

What the industry insiders/experts are saying

"Tyson Fury is the more skilled, but he will make a mistake at some point, and Deontay Wilder will not let him off the hook this time and will finish the job."

Frank Bruno, former WBC heavyweight champion, England

"Tyson Fury was born with a fighter's name, and destiny awaits him on Saturday. As such a great talker, we should all be hoping he wins to keep us entertained in the future. Fury's speed and superior ring IQ will carry the night."

Rick Glaser, international boxing agent, broker and consultant, U.S.

"Fury by decision for me, in a similar type of fight to the first one, without the knockdowns. Fury is sharper, and Wilder is starting to think too much now, looking for the perfect shot, which I feel will never come."

    Danny "Mac" McGarvie, Canadian matchmaker

    Do you even internet?

The last fight was not a draw. Wilder had it easy later on with several knockdowns.

Boxing and the NFL are two sports that are rigged and/or suffer from terrible refs
