3.5 million bet on Astros to win world series, other teams odds?

Guy from Texas bet 3.5 mil on hou to win ws today near where I live in Mississippi.

So does this inflate everyone else's odds? Trying to figure out if I should bet the cards there instead of a closer casino. Will they hedge themselves? Will they just let it ride with the action and hope for an early round knockout?

The answer to this is easy if you know the price the Texan guy got and you have access to that particular books current lines. The place you hear about this not say the price?

On a general case, the guy probably got a square price and the book hasn't changed their current prices because of the bet. Tho as above, this is easily checked with facts.

    D'Iberville

Imagine showing up at the DraftKings at Scarlet Pearl Sportsbook with a briefcase full of money to bet on your favorite team.

That’s what Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale did Tuesday when he arrives at Scarlet Pearl Casino in D’Iberville, opened the silver case and plunked down $3.5 million on his beloved Houston Astros to win the World Series this month.

“It’s the biggest bet in the state of Mississippi,” said LuAnn Pappas, CEO of Scarlet Pearl. It’s a record since sports betting went live Aug. 1, 2018.

Dressed in a bright orange No. 2 Astros shirt and a white Division Champion hat, McIngvale thanked the Scarlet Pearl and DraftKings, who he said agreed to take the bet. Scarlet Pearl said in a press release that McIngvale made national headlines with his desire to place the wager, “and no other gaming company sportsbook in the world has come forward to take the wager.” The sportsbook at Scarlet Pearl was the first DraftKings retail location in the U.S.

DraftKings and Scarlet Pearl, whose owners Bob and Delores Granier were there to witness the bet, will cover the bet, said Matt Kalish, co-founder and COO of DraftKings.

“The whole halo this has created — that’s an amazing promotion for him,” Kalish said of McIngvale’s bold bet. “Everyone’s talking about it.”

If Houston wins, McIngvale wins $7.7 million for an $11.2 million total payout.

And Houston is favored to win. DraftKings puts the team at +200 favorites to take home the Commissioner’s Trophy.

“When you roll out a starting pitching staff that includes Justin Verlander, Gerrit Cole and Zack Greinke, you’re in pretty decent shape,” DraftKings says on its website. “Add in an offense that leads the league in WAR, and you’d be foolish to bet against them.”

McIngvale, 68, isn’t foolish. He was born in Starkville and is known for the over-the-top commercial and promotions for his network of Gallery Furniture stores in the Houston area.

“All of us in Houston believe in the Astros,” he said. If the Astros win, “A lot of customers will get free matresses,” he said.

He’s tied this wager and the sales of mattresses at his stores to the Astros winning the 2019 World Series. Customers who bought mattresses from him stand to get refunds of $3,000 or more if the team wins, according to a report in the Houston Chronicle.

He’s purchased insurance to help cover part of the cost of those rebates, the report said, but he also decided to get some serious skin in the game with his seven-figure wager.

The last time the Astros were World Series champs in 2017, it cost him more than $10 million. A lot of people bought a lot of mattresses in this year’s promotion, he said, and the payout will be “Probably a little bit more than last time,” he said

These puff piece stories always are either bs or full of errors. Here it says DraftKings has Astros at +200 but contradicts this by saying the guy will win 7.7 million from his 3.5 stake.

I doubt they gave him +220 and think as I mentioned in my first post he got a square line, the +200.

And, just lol that no other bookie would take the bet. He couldn't have looked very hard.

'Mattress Mack' places $3.5 million bet on Astros to win World Series

    https://www.espn.com/chalk/story/_/id/27745071/mattress-mack-places-35-million-bet-astros-win-world-series

Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale, owner of Gallery Furniture in Houston, bet $3.5 million on the*Houston Astros*to win the World Series at the DraftKings sportsbook at Scarlet Pearl casino in Biloxi, Mississippi. At +220 odds, the wager would pay a net $7.7 million if the Astros win the World Series.

The article I read is this is a hedge. If the Stros win he has cover the purchase price for a good number of customers like he did the year the Stros won the title earlier.

I bought one of the $3300 mattress sets last month. I hope that the Astros win again like they did in 2017. He has an insurance policy to cover it anyway just like he did in 2017 qwhen he gave out 10 million dollars worth of furniture.

In 2017, you had to buy $5000 or more in furniture to get the deal

Pretty smart business move by this guy. For one, it's free publicity for his store. And the bet he is making probably fully hedges him against all the rebates he'd need to give out if the Astros do win. I doubt the insurance policy alone covers it.

I'm sure he's done the math and is coming ahead in the deal whether the Astros win (and he pays the rebates and wins his bet), or the Astros lose (keeps the rebates from all the furniture he sold, but loses the bet).

This isn't like one guy putting his life savings on a team. It's a pure business play
