NFL Player News - Week of 8/12/19

    Courtesy of Footballguys.com

MIN - Minnesota acquires Kaare Vedvik

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

PK Kaare Vedvik was acquired by the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, Aug. 11, in a trade with the Baltimore Ravens. The Vikings sent a 2020 fifth-round draft pick to Baltimore in return.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Vedvik instantly becomes the favorite to start over Dan Bailey, who was barely adequate last year. Bailey could be looked at by other kicker poor teams, including his old Dallas Cowboys squad that is possibly doubting Brett Maher right now.

NO - RB Alvin Kamara to remain on 'pitch count'

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Triplett

New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara is expected to approach the 61 percent of snaps he played over the final 12 games of last season after Mark Ingram returned from suspension as opposed to the 82 percent of snaps he saw in the first four games, according to comments made by head coach Sean Payton.'It will be similar to what we've been seeing. We've been pleased with the balance we've had with him. We think it's been a good count. ... Look, is one player taking exactly Mark Ingram's reps? I can't tell you that right now. And yet I think there's that presumption that Alvin's going to get more. And I think our pitch count and how we've played and utilized him has been really good,' Payton said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kamara had a huge workload when Mark Ingram was out last year, so it was possible that he would get more work than he did with Ingram if the team didn't trust Murray to the extent they liked Ingram. Kamara is still worth a top five pick in drafts, but this throws cold water on the case to take him #1.

ATL - WR Calvin Ridley back on field

    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Atlanta Falcons WR Calvin Ridley (hamstring) participated in practice Sunday, Aug. 11.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

As long as Ridley gets through a few practices without incident, he should still be a prime mid-round target in a potential breakout year as the team's #2 receiver.

TEN - WR Corey Davis limited

    Source: TitansOnline.com - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans WR Corey Davis (undisclosed) did not participate in team drills during practice Sunday, Aug. 11.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Davis isn't shut down, so his injury isn't too bad, but we still hate to see this in camp after the hamstring issue that slowed him down during his rookie year. Hopefully he will be back on the field for the third preseason game at the latest.

DEN - RB Theo Riddick to miss 6-8 weeks

    Source: 9News.com - Mike Klis

Denver Broncos RB Theo Riddick (shoulder) suffered a 'slight' shoulder fracture in the team's preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday, Aug. 8, and is expected to be sidelined for the next 6-to-8 weeks, according to league sources. Surgery likely will not be required.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Phillip Lindsay could be a better play to open the season with more PPR potential while Riddick is sidelined.

CHI - WR Anthony Miller should be ready for Week 1

Source: Chicago Tribune - Dan Wiederer

Chicago Bears WR Anthony Miller (ankle) did not practice Sunday, Aug. 11, because of his sprained ankle, but head coach Matt Nagy said Miller should be ready for Week 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're still a bit leery of Miller in Week 1 because of the possibility for aggravation in his likely first game action in a month. But this means that his status as an upside bench receiver is still intact. Miller played last year with a bum shoulder that was surgically repaired in the offseason and should be more effective this year once he's healthy.

WAS - WR Trey Quinn may miss preseason game

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins WR Trey Quinn (thumb) suffered a thumb injury during pregame warmups Thursday, Aug. 8, and may not be able to play in the preseason game Thursday Aug. 15.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Quinn is set up for a big role in the Washington passing game. This shouldn't put his Week 1 in doubt, but we'll be tracking it and hoping to see him on the field for the third preseason game.

TEN - WR A.J. Brown making progress

    Source: TitansOnline.com - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans WR A.J. Brown (undisclosed) participated in some early drills during practice Sunday, Aug. 11, but did not participate in any team drills.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brown is being eased back, and there's no telling how much missing almost all of camp will hamper his ability to make an early season impact. Adam Humphries could play a large role in the passing game if Brown isn't ready to be integrated into the offense fully by Week 1.

JAX - WR Dede Westbrook not on field

Source: The Florida Times-Union - John Reid

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Dede Westbrook (groin) did not participate in practice Sunday, Aug. 11.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

All outwards indications are that this is minor and shouldn't endanger Westbrook's Week 1 availability, but seeing Westbrook out there for preseason Week 3 would make us feel better about targeting him in the second half of drafts.

ARI - TE Charles Clay comes off PUP

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Josh Alper

Arizona Cardinals TE Charles Clay (knee) was activated from the the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list Sunday, Aug. 11.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Clay is versatile and could be an interesting piece in the air raid if he stays healthy. That has been the problem, however, for most of his career.

GB - Equanimeous St. Brown injures knee

Source: The Athletic - Matt Schneidman

Green Bay Packers WR Equanimeous St. Brown (knee) suffered a knee injury during practice Sunday, Aug. 11, and sat out the rest of drills.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We will wait to see if he gets an MRI. St. Brown hasn't generated as much buzz as Jake Kumerow this summer, but is probably still in line to make the roster. He could end up being an injured reserve stash if this isn't minor.

CLE - TE Rico Gathers lands in Cleveland

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Free-agent TE Rico Gathers (Cowboys) signed Sunday, Aug. 11, with the Cleveland Browns. In a corresponding move, TE/FB Orson Charles was waived.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gathers looked like the next big basketball convert to tight end before the Cowboys bulked him up to tackle size. We hope to get to see him before the end of the preseason.

SF - WR Jalen Hurd impresses in debut

    Source: ESPN.com

San Francisco 49ers WR Jalen Hurd caught three of his five targets for 31 yards and two touchdowns in the team's preseason opener against the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday, Aug. 10.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hurd ran over a defender at the goal line and presented some interesting "big slot" possibilities with Trent Taylor's exit due to a broken bone in his foot. He could be a DFS very low owned player in Week 1 lineups with big upside against the Bucs secondary.

KC - RB Darwin Thompson totals 51 yards in debut

    Source: ESPN.com

Kansas City Chiefs RB Darwin Thompson carried five times for 22 yards and scored on his lone reception - a 29-yard catch - in the team's preseason opener versus the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday, Aug. 10.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Thompson showed enough to be considered a factor in the Chiefs backfield going forward. He might be the #3 back to open the season, but this has been a moving target with whiplash changes in pecking order under Andy Reid. The Chiefs backfield remains one of the most productive in the league no matter who they plug in.

LAR - Quiet outing for RB Darrell Henderson

    Source: ESPN.com

Los Angeles Rams RB Darrell Henderson rushed six times for 13 yards and lost five yards on his only reception in a 14-3 preseason loss to the Oakland Raiders Saturday, Aug. 10.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Henderson hasn't popped in camp like Miles Sanders or in the first preseason game like David Montgomery. After being listed 5th on the first depth chart, the air is coming out of his overinflated ADP.

    Tuesday Update

OAK - WR Antonio Brown's grievance denied - Says he's looking forward to return

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Mike Jones

Oakland Raiders WR Antonio Brown had his grievance against the NFL regarding the wearing his old helmet - which no longer meets the requirements set forth by the league - denied by an arbitrator Monday, Aug. 12.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This was the expected result. Brown posted on social media afterward saying he is looking forward to returning with his teammates as soon as he's ready. "While I disagree with the arbitrator's decision, I'm working on getting back to full health and looking forward to rejoining my teammates on the field. I'm excited about this season appreciate all the concerns about my feet #AlwaysAFight #Represent #itsbiggerthanme". His current ADP is WR10 (2.12) in 12-team PPR leagues.

DAL - WR Amari Cooper still sidelined

    Source: DallasCowboys.com - Rob Phillips

Dallas Cowboys WR Amari Cooper (heel) is getting closer to returning and not dealing with a long-term issue in regards to his heel injury, according to head coach Jason Garrett, who emphasized to reporters the team does not want to rush him back.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cooper is considered day-to-day with this minor heel injury. The team should keep him out of preseason action until he's 100 percent.

BAL - WR Miles Boykin making a strong impression

    Source: BaltimoreRavens.com - Ryan Mink

Baltimore Ravens WR Miles Boykin continues to impress almost daily, according to Ryan Mink of the team's website.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The rookie has a skill set that can make him a favorite deep target of QB Lamar Jackson. Boykin, a third-round pick out of Notre Dame, reminded some in the scouting community of Lions WR Kenny Golladay because of his size/speed combination. The Ravens won't fill the air with footballs in 2019, but Boykin is a dynasty prospect we are excited to monitor.

HOU - Jordan Thomas back on field

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans TE Jordan M. Thomas (hamstring) returned to practice Monday, Aug. 12.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Thomas should be the lead tight end for the Texans this year. We love their high-powered passing game and Thomas has a size advantage over nearly anyone tasked with covering him. Thomas should be considered a TE3 with upside for Fantasy GMs in 2019.

CIN - RB Giovani Bernard back on field

    Source: ESPN.com - Ben Baby

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard (hamstring) participated in practice Monday, Aug. 12.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bernard will work behind Joe Mixon as the Bengals primary backup. The veteran will also get work as a third-down back and we could see him catching 40 or so passes in 2019.

NE - Quiet camp for RB Damien Harris

Source: Boston Herald - Kevin Duffy

New England Patriots RB Damien Harris has not seen many reps during training camp, according to the Boston Herald's Kevin Duffy, who adds it is 'pretty clear' Sony Michel is the 'No. 1 RB on the team right now.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Harris is a talented rookie and has a good all-around skill set. Michel is more dynamic as a runner and reports indicate he's the main man for the Patriots. Harris will have to work as a backup and wait for his opportunity if Michel is healthy.

WAS - WR Terry McLaurin poised for key role early

    Source: MMQB - Albert Breer

Washington Redskins WR Terry McLaurin is a 'lock' for a role on offense early this season, according to MMQB's Albert Breer, who added that the coaching staff loves McLaurin's speed, toughness and versatility.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's a lot to like about McLaurin's game and his situation. First, his route running is quite nuanced for a young player. Second, McLaurin does a good job of winning contested catches and shows strength at the end of the route. Finally, the third-round pick from Ohio State is set up with first-round pick from Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins. The two were a nice combination for the Buckeyes and should continue that chemistry in the pros.

DEN - WR Emmanuel Sanders should see preseason snaps

Source: The Denver Post - Kyle Fredrickson

Denver Broncos WR Emmanuel Sanders (Achilles) is expected to play at some point during the preseason, according to head coach Vic Fangio. Sanders was a full participant in 11-on-11 practice Monday, Aug. 12.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sanders is well ahead in his recovery from the Achilles' injury that ended his season prematurely in 2018. He's still out to prove he can play at a high level and all camp reports out of Denver indicate that Sanders looks better than ever. Sanders can be a fine No. 2 receiver for the Broncos, especially with QB Joe Flacco (and his love for veteran receivers) tossing him the rock. We like Sanders at his current ADP of WR46 (10.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

CAR - WR Curtis Samuel primed for big year?

    Source: MMQB - Albert Breer

Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel 'might be the player who's taking the biggest step forward' and may be 'primed for a breakout third year in the league,' according to MMQB's Albert Breer.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Samuel has been developing as more than a gadget player with the Panthers over the last couple of seasons. We are excited to see what the playmaker has in store this season. Samuel is a high-end WR4 with upside for Fantasy GMs this year.

IND - WR Parris Campbell has setback

Source: The Indianapolis Star - Joel A. Erickson

Indianapolis Colts WR Parris Campbell (hamstring) was close to returning Sunday, Aug. 11, but he felt a little something in his hamstring.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No need to rush the rookie into the lineup. As excited as we are about the former Ohio State star, we'd rather see that hamstring injury fully gone and Campbell out there as close to full strength as possible.

HOU - RB Duke Johnson idle

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans RB Duke Johnson (hamstring) didn't practice Monday, Aug. 12, and he's unlikely to play in the second preseason game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Texans are excited to see what Johnson can do in their backfield...on more than just third downs. We'll have to wait and see him in action, which is fine as Johnson is a seasoned veteran who doesn't need every rep to get up to speed...even with a new team.

NYJ - RB Ty Montgomery limps off

Source: New York Post - Brian Costello

New York Jets RB Ty Montgomery (groin) limped off with appeared to be a groin injury Monday, Aug. 12.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Montgomery is playing a hybrid role for the Jets this year. He's not really a running back or a receiver because he's both. We'll know more about this injury in a bit.

NE - RB Rex Burkhead back at practice

    Source: NESN.com - Zack Cox

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (undisclosed) returned to practice Monday, Aug. 12, after missing time last week.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Burkhead is trying to work his way into the mix in the Patriots backfield once again. Sony Michel is the lead back and rookie Damien Harris is his biggest threat for touches.

NE - TE Eric Saubert headed to NE

    Source: ESPNBoston.com - Mike Reiss

Atlanta Falcons TE Eric Saubert was acquired by the New England Patriots Monday, Aug. 12, in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Patriots get an interesting and athletic player here to add to the tight end room. Saubert is a move tight end who can make difficult catches over the middle or near the sidelines. The Falcons rarely used him and when he was on the field, Saubert was mostly a blocker. Matt LaCosse should be the starter for the Patriots to open the season and Saubert will compete to make it as an end-of-the-bench guy. In crazy deep dynasty formats we'll continue to watch Saubert.

DEN - QB Drew Lock works as backup

    Source: 9News.com - Mike Klis

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock took all the reps with the second-team offense during practice Sunday, Aug. 11.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lock is the future of the Broncos at the position. He's been getting slowly worked into the second-team offense and the team must feel like he's ready for more. Lock is athletic and has a big arm but his footwork needs to be cleaned up before he's ready to start. So long as Joe Flacco is healthy, Lock won't play for the Broncos in 2019.

    Wednesday Update

IND - QB Andrew Luck likely out for preseason

Source: CBS 4 Indianapolis - Mike Chappell

Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck (ankle) is unlikely to play in the preseason due to an ankle issue, according to general manager Chris Ballard Tuesday, Aug. 13. Ballard said he's not ready to say the regular-season opener is in jeopardy due to the injury and Luck will continue rehabbing.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Stay tuned closely to this one as things don't seem to be adding up. Lots of these reports are conflicting which worries us. Clearly something isn't right here and we're hoping to have more clarity soon. If you're drafting today, I'd avoid Luck until we know more. It's just that uncertain right now.

DAL - WR Amari Cooper dealing with plantar fascia irritation

Dallas Cowboys WR Amari Cooper (heel) is dealing with plantar fascia irritation, according to a source who adds 'he'll be fine.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a minor injury and summed up as an irritation. Cooper will be managed in preseason when he returns but he should be good to go for Week 1 of the regular season.

DAL - RB Ezekiel Elliott return for opener a coin flip?

Source: CBS Sports HQ - Matthew Mayer

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott's return in time for the season opener against the New York Giants may have no better than a 50-50 proposition, according to comments made by CBS Sports color analyst Tony Romo.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Elliott is a risky first-round pick at this time. We have confidence the two sides will find a way to get something done. Stay tuned.

OAK - WR Antonio Brown returns

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Oakland Raiders WR Antonio Brown will return to the team's facility Tuesday, Aug. 13, after his grievance on equipment was denied.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brown will find a new helmet and get back to practice when his feet are healed. Now that is equipment grievance is over, we wait as Brown's feet recover. There's no timetable for his return to practice but nobody around the team thinks he'll miss time in the regular season.

MIA - RB Kenyan Drake limps off practice field

Source: Palm Beach Post - Joe Schad

Miami Dolphins RB Kenyan Drake (lower body) limped off the practice field Tuesday, Aug. 13, due to an apparent lower-body injury. Head coach Brian Flores didn't offer specifics after practice but said 'hopefully he's back out there tomorrow.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bad news for Drake here. He's getting pushed by Kalen Ballage for the starting job in 2019 and this injury could help the team make that decision. We'll see how bad this lower body injury is and will get more information if Drake does or does not practice on Wednesday.

ATL - WR Julio Jones back at full speed

Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - D. Orlando Ledbetter

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (foot) is reportedly back to running routes at full speed after spending most of the early part of training camp recovering from a foot injury, according to D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones is going to be good to go for Week 1 of the regular season. We are unlikely to see him in the preseason. Fantasy GMs know that Jones is a WR1 and are taking him off the board around WR4 (1.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

NYG - WR Golden Tate's appeal denied

Source: New York Post - Paul Schwartz

New York Giants WR Golden Tate's appeal of his four-game suspension for violating the league's performance-enhancing substance abuse policy was denied Tuesday, Aug. 13.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. Tate reported himself to the league after taking a banned fertility drug. He'll miss the first month of the regular season, so the Giants will use more Sterling Shepard and Evan Engram when they go through the air during that time.

PHI - WR DeSean Jackson more than a deep threat?

Source: NBC Sports Philadelphia - Reuben Frank

Philadelphia Eagles WR DeSean Jackson is 'a complete player' who can 'do anything that he wants,' according to offensive coordinator Mike Groh. Jackson appears to be rejuvenated by his return to Philadelphia and is thrilled with head coach Doug Pederson's offense, telling NBC Sports Philadelphia's Reuben Frank that 'we got some dope stuff in this year' and the 'kind of stuff (Pederson) has up his sleeve for this offense ... is unbelievable.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jackson can be more than a deep threat....but he's mainly going to be the guy that stretches the field for the Eagles offense. His big-play ability make him an interesting flex play most every week. Jackson has a current ADP of WR47 (10.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

PHI - TE Zach Ertz's production likely to take a hit

    Source: NJ.com - Zack Rosenblatt

Philadelphia Eagles TE Zach Ertz has been 'one of - if not the - best players in training camp,' and 'that's especially true in the red zone where he seems to be unstoppable,' according to NJ.com's Zack Rosenblatt. Nevertheless, his targets are expected to drop in an offense with Alshon Jeffery, DeSean Jackson, Nelson Agholor, Dallas Goedert and Darren Sproles, per Rosenblatt.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's going to be difficult to duplicate the 116 receptions Ertz had in 2018. We like projecting him more around 85 catches or so, and Ertz is still a top-3 fantasy tight end regardless of his numbers taking a dip.

SF - No practice for WR Deebo Samuel, TE George Kittle

Source: Bay Area News Group - Cam Inman

San Francisco 49ers WR Deebo Samuel (personal) and TE George Kittle (calf) did not participate in practice Tuesday, Aug. 13. Samuel was excused for personal reasons, while Kittle is dealing with calf tightness, according to the Bay Area News Group's Cam Inman.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll see if this pair can practice later in the week. The 49ers are traveling to Denver for joint practices with the Broncos on Friday and Saturday.

WAS - RB Derrius Guice still waiting for approval

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins RB Derrius Guice (knee) has been participating in practices this summer but has yet to receive clearance to play in a game, and he told ESPN's John Keim on Tuesday, Aug. 13, that he's not sure when he'll play in the preseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Guice has a ton of talent as a runner but a knee injury cost him all of the 2018 season. He missed his rookie season last year and we're excited to see him in his first regular season game action. Guice is back now, but it did take more time than originally thought to recover from his knee injury and there were a few setbacks along the way.

    MIN - RB Dalvin Cook: I'm a 3-down back

    Source: Vikings.com - Eric Smith

Minnesota Vikings RB Dalvin Cook says he's a three-down running back who's ready for a full workload in the 2019 season. 'Yeah. I love catching the football and love making plays, so anyway I can get the ball in my hands and change the scoreboard or change the (first down) markers, I'm willing to do that,' Cook told a writer from the team's website. 'Any way possible. Catching the ball, running the football ... I'm willing to do it. So yeah, I consider myself a three-down back.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cook is correct, he is capable of playing effectively on all three downs. With Latavius Murray gone to the Saints, Cook has the backfield all to himself.

MIA - Another start for QB Ryan Fitzpatrick?

    Source: Sun-Sentinel - Safid Deen

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick could start a second straight preseason game Friday, Aug. 16, when the Dolphins visit the Buccaneers, head coach Brian Flores said Tuesday, Aug. 13.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fitzpatrick is ahead of Josh Rosen in the competition for the starting job with the Dolphins. We have a feeling no matter who begins the season as the starter, both quarterbacks should play at some point in the 2019 season.

DEN - WR Emmanuel Sanders had ankle surgery

    Source: 9News.com - Mike Klis

Denver Broncos WR Emmanuel Sanders (Achilles, ankle) said he underwent surgery on his right ankle during the offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He's looking good out at Broncos camp according to multiple reports. Sanders said he dealt with problems with his ankle for the last two seasons. Now, he's likely to be healthier than he has been in quite some time. Sanders is competing with Courtland Sutton to be the Broncos No. 1 wide receiver in 2019.

Now is the time to jump all over the Chargers -3 in Regular season game 1, IF you can. Several books still have it in Vegas, but JJ's lovers (the off shore books) are taking it off the board. Even if Luck is able to start, he will be very rusty, and very self conscious about his bad ankle. This was not a bad bet going in, and now really looks good. The Charger defense is one of the better ones in the NFL. This probably will be the ONLY NFL play I will post because to be honest, it is really not worth posting plays in here.

    Thursday Update

MIA - RB Kenyan Drake available for Week 1?

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins RB Kenyan Drake (foot) will miss some time because of a foot injury, but head coach Brian Flores said the team hopes Drake will be ready for Week 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Drake has been seen in a walking boot, but Flores is downplaying the situation. He's unlikely to play in the preseason but the team is emphasizing that he'll be back for the season opener. Without Drake on the field, second-year back Kalen Ballage will work as the Dolphins starter.

HOU - RB Duke Johnson to miss preseason game

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans RB Duke Johnson (hamstring) is still sidelined because of his hamstring injury and will not play in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's an unfortunate injury as we're all excited to see what Johnson can do with his new team. They'll take it easy on him while he recovers from this hamstring injury. When healthy, Johnson will work as a pass-catching back behind starter Lamar Miller...and there's a chance that he could push for a larger role. Stay tuned.

MIA - QB Josh Rosen running with ones

    Source: ESPN.com - Cameron Wolfe

Miami Dolphins QB Josh Rosen is working with the first-team offense Wednesday, Aug. 14, and is receiving 'true starter burn' this week in practice, according to beat writer Cameron Wolfe.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll see this back-and-forth until the Dolphins decide on who the starting quarterback should be. Rosen is competing with veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick for that top spot. All reports indicate that Fitzpatrick is in the lead, but we'll see if Rosen can make up some ground getting a 'true starter burn'...whatever that is.

SF - TE George Kittle day-to-day

Source: NBC Sports Bay Area - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (calf) is considered day-to-day because of his calf injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The 49ers have no need to rush Kittle back into action. It is not known if he will participate in the joint practices with the Denver Broncos or play in the preseason game Monday, Aug. 19.

WAS - QB Colt McCoy to miss preseason game

Source: NBC Sports Washington - JP Finlay

Washington Redskins QB Colt McCoy (leg) will not play in the preseason game Thursday, Aug. 15.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That means more Case Keenum and 2019 first-round pick Dwayne Haskins. McCoy is still dealing with the leg injury he suffered last season according to head coach Jay Gruden.

CAR - QB Cam Newton expected to play Friday

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton is expected to receive playing time during the preseason game Friday, Aug. 16.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Newton did not play in the preseason opener for the Panthers but he'll get a bit of action this week. We don't expect him to see more than a series or two. Then we'll see more from Kyle Allen and Will Grier.

KC - No practice for WR Sammy Watkins

Source: The Kansas City Star - Brooke Pryor

Kansas City Chiefs WR Sammy Watkins (illness) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Aug. 14, because of an illness.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watkins has an illness but nothing major. As healthy as he's been in some time, Watkins is trying to make it a full 16-game season for the first time since 2014. He has a strong rapport with QB Patrick Mahomes and is a boom/bust WR3/flex for Fantasy GMs in 2019.

TEN - WR Adam Humphries unable to finish practice

    Source: ESPN.com - Turron Davenport

Tennessee Titans WR Adam Humphries (undisclosed) left practice early Wednesday, Aug. 14. Head coach Mike Vrabel said Humphries will be reevaluated and hopefully will be able to practice Thursday, Aug. 15.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll see what this situation is all about when more information is known. If healthy, Humphries will serve as the Titans No. 3 receiver and play from the slot. It's going to be difficult for Humphries to best the career numbers he had in 2018. Last season with the Buccaneers, Humphries snagged career highs in receptions (76), yards (816), and touchdowns (5).

NE - Two receivers leave practice

Source: Boston Herald - Kevin Duffy

New England Patriots WR Phillip Dorsett (undisclosed) and WR Maurice Harris (undisclosed) left practice early Wednesday, Aug. 14, because of undisclosed injuries.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Some reports have suggested that Harris has been one of the best receivers in camp for the Patriots. We'll see if any more news about these two banged up wideouts gets released.

MIA - WR DeVante Parker not on field

    Source: ESPN.com - Cameron Wolfe

Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker (undisclosed) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Aug. 14.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A first-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft, Parker has failed to play up to his potential as a pro and has never played a full 16-game season. He was dominating in the spring and in training camp so far, and Parker was healthy. We'll see if they tell us what's going on here. Parker wants 1,000 yards this year and wants to prove to the new staff that he's worth keeping around in the future.

NE - RB Damien Harris nicked up

Source: The Athletic - Jeff Howe

New England Patriots RB Damien Harris (hand, wrist) has been dealing with a minor hand or wrist injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Harris has had a 'meh' kind of training camp according to some reports. The rookie from Alabama has a well-rounded skill set and can be a factor on all three downs. However, he's not pushing Sony Michel for the starting job as some had predicted before the start of training camp.

    NE - N'Keal Harry returns

Source: The Athletic - Nick Underhill

New England Patriots WR N'Keal Harry (hamstring, foot) returned to practice Wednesday, Aug. 14.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Harry needs to stay healthy and start impressing in Patriots camp. The 2019 first-round pick has been a disappointment so far according to beat writers covering the team. We'll see if things can turn around for him as training camp rolls on.

CHI - QB Mitchell Trubisky progressing on reads

Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero

Chicago Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky is 'way past' where he was last season in reading defenses, according to head coach Matt Nagy. Trubisky was not always in tune with reading blitzes and coverages because he was so worried about getting the play called. Now, he's playing off of instincts.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Trubisky needs to take a step forward in 2019. Fantasy GMs may have something nice on their hands if Trubisky continues to develop as a pro passer. Trubisky has a current ADP of QB21 (14.01) in 12-team PPR leagues. He could easily outperform that draft position this season.

    Friday Update

LAC - No progress in RB Melvin Gordon talks

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon has not make any progress in contract extension talks with the Chargers, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Nothing new here as training camp and the preseason rolls on. The Chargers seem content to wait this thing out, and they could go with guys like Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson if Gordon misses time. Gordon wants to return to the team before the start of the regular season but is prepared to sit out games if he does not receive a new deal.

MIA - RB Kalen Ballage assumes top spot for now

Source: The Miami Herald - Adam H. Beasley

Miami Dolphins RB Kalen Ballage will serve as the team's starting running back until RB Kenyan Drake (foot) is ready to return.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ballage will have a tough draw Week 1 against the Ravens if he starts, but he'll be worth a flex play. Mark Walton projects as the third down back for now, although he could face a suspension.

LAC - WR Keenan Allen may miss rest of preseason

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Los Angeles Chargers WR Keenan Allen (ankle) suffered an ankle injury during practice this week and could miss the last three preseason games, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Chargers don't want any setback here, and with a few weeks to go before the season opener it's wise to shut the veteran down. Allen is expected to be ready for the start of the regular season.

OAK - QB Derek Carr more comfortable with Jon Gruden

Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Michael David Smith

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr said Thursday, Aug. 15, he is feeling more comfortable talking with head coach Jon Gruden this year than last. 'Year 2, we're having different level of conversations,' Carr said. 'I have two offseasons under my belt, almost two training camps under my belt, I have a full year of experience under my belt, of knowing what checks he wants, what he wants me to get to, what his thought process is on third-and-short, on second-and-short, I know what routes he wants me checking to versus different looks. I'm doing my best just to execute this difficult offense. There's just so much on the quarterback's plate that it's different from some of the other systems that I've been in.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Carr has playmakers around him on offense, so it's up to him to translate that into production and points. Getting comfortable with Gruden and his high expectations is nothing but a good thing. Carr could easily outperform his current ADP of QB23 (14.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

DAL - RB Ezekiel Elliott staying in game shape

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott's weight is in the low 220s, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Thursday, Aug. 15. It's Elliott's lowest weight since his rookie year, a source adds. Elliott remains away from the team during a contract holdout but will be ready to play as soon as he signs.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It sounds like being out of shape because of an extended holdout is not a worry for Elliott.

HOU - WR Will Fuller wants to play in preseason

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans WR Will Fuller (knee) said he hopes to receive some playing time this preseason so he can knock off some of the rust.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fuller only made it through seven games in 2018 before this knee injury shut him down for the year. He's talented, has a great connection with QB Deshaun Watson and can be one of the best deep threats in the game when healthy. Fuller has a current ADP of WR33 (7.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

CLE - WR Odell Beckham sits again

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns WR Odell Beckham Jr. (hip) did not participate in practice Thursday, Aug. 15.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No worries here. Beckham is not worried about this hip injury and he would be playing if it was the regular season. He's good to go for Week 1.

Cleveland Browns TE David Njoku (knee) did not participate in practice Thursday, Aug. 15.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Browns may just be using caution here. Njoku's knee has been an issue for a couple of days. We'll see if he can get back into action next week.

NE - WR Maurice Harris misses practice

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Reiss

New England Patriots WR Maurice Harris (undisclosed) did not participate in practice Thursday, Aug. 15.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The injury is undisclosed, so there's no way of knowing what is going on or what kind of recovery he's facing. Most reports indicate Harris has been the best wide receiver at Patriots camp. We want to see him on the field but will have to wait.

NE - WR Demaryius Thomas does some work

Source: The Athletic - Jeff Howe

New England Patriots WR Demaryius Thomas (Achilles) was doing full sprints on a side field during practice Thursday, Aug. 15.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Thomas is a bit of a wild card in the Patriots WR corps. If healthy, he could become a favorite target of Tom Brady -- especially in the red zone. However, Thomas has struggled to stay healthy in recent years and is not quite the same player he used to be. We'll watch him as training camp and the preseason rolls on.

CAR - WR Curtis Samuel causing coverage issues

Source: Charlotte Observer - Brendan Marks

Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel has been 'practically impossible to cover' in training camp, according to Brendan Marks of the Charlotte Observer. Head coach Ron Rivera said Samuel is 'light years ahead' of where he has been in past training camps.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Samuel could make a leap this year, and Fantasy GMs can scoop him up at a good value -- for now. He had one touchdown every six touches in 2018, and he is looking for a larger role in 2019. Samuel is a mismatch every time he's on the field and one of the most explosive players in the game today. He's got a current ADP of WR38 (8.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

MIA - Nick O'Leary looking like Dolphins' best TE

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins TE Nick O'Leary is the team's best pass-catching option at the position, according to Armando Salguero of The Miami Herald.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This has been the consistent word out of Dolphins camp. While O'Leary is playing well, second-year TE Mike Gesicki continues to struggle both with blocking and pass-catching.

CLE - WR Rashard Higgins in line to be WR3

    Source: BrownsZone - Scott Petrak

Cleveland Browns WR Rashard Higgins is the leading candidate to be the team's third wide receiver during WR Antonio Callaway's suspension, according to Scott Petrak of BrownsZone.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Higgins has great chemistry with Baker Mayfield and he'll get favorable matchups while defense are worried more about Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. He's worth a late round flier in deep leagues.

PIT - WR Donte Moncrief back at practice

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Josh Alper

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Donte Moncrief (finger) had not practiced for six straight days with a broken ring finger before returning to the field Wednesday, Aug. 14.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Moncrief appears to be penciled as the #2 receiver in Pittsburgh despite the injury but James Washington and Diontae Johnson will play a role along with one of Eli Rogers or Ryan Switzer in the slot.

MIA - WR Albert Wilson on the mend

Miami Dolphins WR Albert Wilson (hip) is hopeful to begin team drills next week, and he is on track to play in Week 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wilson's return has been slow and he still hasn't built any rapport with the Dolphins new quarterbacks in the team's new offensive system. Kenny Stills could be a big factor in the slot early if Wilson and Jakeem Grant are not yet full speed to open the season.

    Josh Gordon Effect

New England WR Josh Gordon has been reinstated by the NFL.

    Link: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001041994/article/nfl-conditionally-reinstates-patriots-wr-josh-gordon

    From the article:

"Josh Gordon is back in the league again.

"The NFL is conditionally reinstating the New England Patriots wide receiver following his indefinite suspension, the league announced.

"We are all rooting for Josh to succeed, both personally and professionally," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. "Everyone shares in that hope and will continue to support him to every extent possible. But as Josh acknowledged, ultimately his success is up to him."

"Gordon is allowed to return to New England's facility and engage in conditioning work and individual workouts on Sunday. Subject to appropriate progress on clinical care and other arrangements, Gordon will be permitted to participate in team activities including practice. The receiver may attend but not play in New England's third preseason game on Aug. 22."

Clearly, Gordon has had his issues and just because he's back doesn't mean he'll remain back. But this is big news for the Patriots and Tom Brady and obviously for Gordon. We'll be watching this one closely for you.

Our Phil Alexander had this quick take:

"Gordon looked a step slower in New England after appearing in only 10 games over the previous four seasons, but there is no denying he instantly becomes the Patriots best option on the perimeter.

"From Weeks 5-14 last year, Gordon ranked as the cumulative WR22 in PPR leagues and was 12th among wide receivers in total air yards. For context, the wide receivers currently being drafted in the WR22 range include Lockett, Green, Boyd, and D.J. Moore. Just like each of those players, Gordon is a fantasy difference-maker worthy of starting as a WR2/flex in any given week, and it's likely you won't have to draft him as early due to relapse concerns."

Stay tuned as we see how this plays out.

    Ezekiel Elliott Update

Some hopeful news this morning for Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott.

Mike Leslie, Sports Anchor at WFAA in Dallas reports:

"Can confirm picture of Zeke Elliott flying home from Cabo is real. He’s back to DFW now, as the Cowboys return from the Pacific this weekend, after today’s game in Hawaii. No deal yet, but they remain optimistic it will get done soon. His training team traveled home with him."

Leslie goes on to say, this does NOT mean a deal is imminent. But I don't think it's a stretch at all to call this a positive move. There clearly appears to be optimism here. As you likely know, Elliott has been training with his training team in Cabo San Lucas in Mexico. He's reportedly in the best shape of his career.

Again, don't make this any more than it is. Elliott is returning home with his training team. The Cowboys are playing in Hawaii and will be back to Dallas soon. As you well know, these things can change quickly. But right now, I like the way this is trending. Stay tuned.

And if you want my take on it, I very much expect a deal to get done and for Elliott to be there on Week 1.

Have a great rest of your Saturday.

    Sunday Update

IND - QB Andrew Luck works out Saturday

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck (ankle) worked out on the field before the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 17, and appeared to be moving around well.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a bit of good news for Luck after what has been a disappointing news cycle for the veteran quarterback during training camp. The team is optimistic that Luck will be ready for Week 1 of the regular season.

ARI - QB Kyler Murray to play more in preseason game

    Source: ESPN.com - Josh Weinfuss

Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray will play at least the first half of the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 24, according to head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We want to see how Murray responds after struggling against the Raiders in week two of the preseason. Murray is a quick learner, so he has to take what he learned the last time out and improve. The Raiders confused Murray with some coverage and blitz schemes on Thursday night. Fantasy GMs have been going wild about Murray in drafts, and he's got a current ADP of QB9 (8.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

PHI - QB Josh McCown signed

The Philadelphia Eagles signed free-agent QB Josh McCown (Jets) to a one-year contract Saturday, Aug. 17, according to multiple sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McCown had retired following the 2018 season to become a broadcaster for ESPN but will put those plans on hold until after this season. He'll work as the backup to Carson Wentz in 2019. The Eagles needed help at the position with Nate Sudfeld (wrist) and Cody Kessler (concussion) banged up.

Philadelphia Eagles WR Braxton Miller was waived Saturday, Aug. 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Miller, a third-round pick of the Texans in the 2016 NFL draft, has to now find a new team...again. He's always been raw as a receiver as he was a former quarterback at Ohio State, but Miller is physical and athletic with the ball in his hands. The team needed to make room for newly signed QB Josh McCown. We'll see if Miller can latch on with another team.

Keep an eye on this situation. Blue is behind the oft-injured Leonard Fournette and Jacksonville has to be ready if (when?) Fournette is banged up again. That could be Blue, but this ankle injury has opened the door for rookie Ryquell Armstead to emerge as a handcuff option in deeper leagues.

A good sign for Lee here, but it doesn't mean he'll be ready for the start of the regular season. He may have to miss a couple of games to start the year, and Lee is likely fourth on the depth chart when he does return to the field for the Jaguars.

MIA - QB Ryan Fitzpatrick likely to start next game

Source: The Miami Herald - Adam H. Beasley

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick likely will be the starting quarterback for the third preseason game, according to head coach Brian Flores.

That's a good sign that Fitzpatrick will begin the regular season as the starter. Nothing is set in stone of course, but the competition between Fitzpatrick and Josh Rosen will continue for another week or so.

JAX - Jacksonville adds RB Elijah Hood

    Source: Jaguars.com

Free-agent RB Elijah Hood (Panthers) signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars Saturday, Aug. 17. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. The team also waived QB Tanner Lee.

Hood is a big back who can grind inside. They've got some banged up running backs, specifically Alfred Blue, at this time and needed some depth at the position.

DEN - Kevin Hogan still in the mix for QB2

Source: The Denver Post - Ryan O'Halloran

Denver Broncos QB Kevin Hogan is 'absolutely' still in competition for the backup job with QB Drew Lock, according to offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello; Lock has received the majority of the second-team reps during practice this past week.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's what the team has to say at this point but Drew Lock is taking over. We've seen an increase in Lock's snaps with the second-team offense over the last week or so. If Lock continues to progress, he could open the season as the primary backup to Joe Flacco.

CAR - QB Taylor Heinicke to get a look at QB2?

    Source: ESPN.com - David Newton

Carolina Panthers QB Taylor Heinicke could be thrust back into the mix for the No. 2 quarterback job after completing 8 of 12 passes for 78 yards and a touchdown against the Buffalo Bills on Friday, Aug. 16, in the opinion of ESPN's David Newton.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Panthers other backup quarterbacks, Kyle Allen and Will Grier, have had struggles this training camp and preseason. Heinicke is also familiar with offensive coordinator Norv Turner and seems to have a leg up on the competition.

BUF - TE Dawson Knox making progress

Source: The Athletic - Joe Buscaglia

Buffalo Bills TE Dawson Knox (hamstring) was a limited participant in practice and spent time running routes with the training staff Friday, Aug. 16.

The rookie from Ole Miss could be the lead tight end for the Bills this. First, he has to get healthy -- stay healthy -- and produce for the team as a receiver while also being a sound blocker on what should be one of the most run-heavy offenses in the NFL.
