How difficult is Bethpage Black?


Bethpage Black, site of the 2019 PGA Championship, is a difficult golf course, as the sign proudly displayed near their first tee indicates. In the two U.S. Opens it has hosted (in 2002 and 2009), Bethpage played as the most difficult course on the PGA Tour in relation to par. In the two regular PGA Tour events hosted at Bethpage (the 2012 and 2016 Barclays), it played as the 16th and 12th hardest course in the 2012 and 2016 PGA Tour seasons, respectively. This easier scoring was in part an artificial difference, as the par was changed from 70 to 71 for The Barclays.

Tiger not to finish in Top 5, I like that even if the juice is a bit higher than I would usually go for in general. I suppose not to finish in Top 10 is also viable though I went with the former. But either way, I really feel that Tiger's recent win has him now over-hyped as to how well he's going to do here and perhaps in the near future - hard to forget his numerous times missing the cut and not finishing anywhere near Top 5 even when he made the cut. So yeah I think that's a good bet so I went with the max on that!

Also like the U64.5 single round score. Granted I pretty much always like the under in those situations since it always feels like the sheer volume of players, one person will randomly have the round of their life and will alone cause that bet to win, even if they shoot above 70 every other round. Granted if the number was say 60.5 or thereabouts, I wouldn't probably go for it, but one round of seven under par or better really feels like it ought to happen somewhere.

Yes, indeed, the two I mentioned above which I like. In addition to Tiger being over-hyped after his recent win, there is also the issue of the lawsuit that's occurring. Most seem to think it's totally bogus, but whether it is or not, no question that could be an additional thing on his mind which might prevent him from being at the top of his game.

More action could be good too though! So if Rudy has some ideas, am curious to know what they are - "easy" bets are, after all, never a bad thing!

Going the whole way with banking on the play to be very good this tourney on average, bet the maximum on the winning score being under and the cut line being under as well. Risky, but again, just as I did with betting the under on the single round score, am thinking the play is going to be very good this week with several guys perhaps going in the -10 range.

Very correlated wagers in a way I think - things go well for me I might win them all or close. Things go badly could be the reverse! But hey that's what makes gambling worthwhile right??

Reading my mind! I went with the unders on the total score 274.5 and best round 64.5 as you mentioned (also went with under on the cut 145.5 score).

And as I said above, I do think Tiger is generally going to be predicted to finish higher based on his recent win than he really should. So I took him to finish outside the Top 5 as well as the Top 10. Guess we'll see what happens!

Thanks for the tip. I originally bet the under on this, but seeing the conditions and the expected low scores I was really having second thoughts about that wager. And now that you backed this up as well, I decided to bet the over to negate my original action (at a slight juice loss). Hopefully that turns out for the best!

The no albatross seems like a pretty sure fire bet, but -3000 juice is a heckuva lot to pay! Just not a fan of the risk/reward ratio of that so I think I'm gonna lay off.

It's looking like it's very tough so far. Only 4 under par from over 50 completed rounds.

Indeed. That was one prop I laid off of though. However, if Koepka can continue like that, in addition to already winning the U64.5 for me, he will almost certainly also win the U274.5 for me as well!

However, Optional is correct that on the whole the course is proving tough as it usually does, not as sure about the U145.5 cut mark, as that seems far less clear.

Yes, thanks to Drew! Also already paid my O69.5 Tiger first round score bet! I really went hardcore betting that Tiger wouldn't do so great this tourney for reasons mentioned above. Risky perhaps, but so far seems to be correct!
