Thought I could make a career wagering on horses

Back in the day. I was so naive & ignorant. I'm dumb today. How stupid I was then. Seeking a positive outcome with a negative plan of attack.

The track hold makes it nearly impossible, toughest game out there to beat.

It is for 99.5% of people, a miserable existence.

The hours you must put in.

The per hour payoff breakdown is not worth it for most.

No family life and forget having kids.

It can be done, but at what price?

Me and Ken nailed a 40k DD one morning. Like kids in a candy store. Ken punched it in wrong and Henry said he'd pay us but we'd never bet there again. We stayed but Henry was wrong that time. What a paradigm shift.

Contests are the way to go , big money potential, small risk as most contests are 200-500 to enter. Was pissed when they took this show off the air.

Was pissed too when they cancelled this show after season 1, cancelled cause horses were dying during shoots, they could have computer generated the races and kept the show going.

I loved this show. It was sad that it was cancelled, because they had multiple storylines to pursue.

    Belmont and Aqueduct

    70% Jamaicans
    20% Mexicans
    10% old White guys

Love people watching when horses come down the stretch. Guys whipping themselves with programs, leaning thinking it will help the horse win with the new angle, screaming like crazy about to lose a lung. All over $1 exactas and 10 cent superfectas

Unless I make a spot bet if I go to the track (which is rare now) or play a full card on TVG, if I break even im happy cause I spent nothing for 4 hours of entertainment.

General, this could be the year where everything comes together.

I've always dreamt of hitting a piece of the KY Derby super-fecta. How nice would that be? We hit it so clean that they invite US into the Winners' Circle.

Agreed, but on theses major league contests you can win your way in for a lot less by playing qualifiers.

LOL. Wish I could claim to be one of the sharks but no go. But all kidding aside really think tourneys are the way to go. Average hold on horse tourneys is 11.5%.

15-20% take by racetrack, basically impossible to win. Plus, the losing money will not equal much...it is not like you have old guys betting 1k a pop per race...its a dying industry.

Also "hit 40k on a DD once". You made that sound like thats a dream amount. 40k? That would cover my annual bills here outside of DC. That would not last more than 9 months in California.

There is no career path with professional gambling. If you do it and then try to go get a real job, you get laughed at in over 50% of interviews. The rare time someone will move you on to next round is if they are a degenerate themselves and your "I traveled and gambled for a living" hit a soft spot of their own delusions of grandeur.

So many people have this delusion of grandeur around gambling. Even if you win, you likely are miserable. Whenever i read that someone quit their job to play poker for a living (most common), I feel bad for them. They will regret it, 99/100 will. Sure, early 2000s TONS of fish and free money to be made in poker. Now? Heck no. 8/10 players at a NLHE game these days have at least a solid clue of how to play.

That's good info. When u look at the vig attached to different gaming arenas, it's outrageous:

    * Horses. 18 to 20%.
    * Poker Tournaments. Often 30% + sometimes even more when u consider Dealer Add-on, which adds nothing to the prize pool.
    * Sports Betting 4-team parlays. Pays 10/1 in Vegas, when it should be 15/1. That's 31.5% vig.

Don't forget the wonderful taxman who takes 10-40% of gambling revenue AND an additional 25% of anyone who actually wins a decent amount gambling.

The taxman is the one that really bothers me. I understand taxes need to be made, but you're already taxing the casino revenue. No other country that I am aware of (Canada and europe) charges tax on personal gambling winnings.

Good posts, men. But, what about all the emails I get from people who state they gamble for a living and want to share the knowledge for a small fee?
