    Medication Management of Pathological Gambling

(Sammy has always looked out for the well being of Posters) -- Always consult a Medical Professional

    Relationship to Other Mental Illnesses

Although pathological gambling is classified as an impulse-control disorder, it has many similarities to substance abuse.

Clinical similarities are reflected in the diagnostic criteria for both disorders and include symptoms of tolerance and withdrawal; repeated, unsuccessful attempts to cut back or stop; and impairment in major areas of life functioning.

Epidemiological data also support a relationship between pathological gambling and substance abuse, as pathological gamblers are also likely to abuse alcohol and other drugs.

Meds: Combining Fluvoxamine & Naltrexone daily have had positive clinical results in the retardation of pathological gambling

I know guys who were on Naltrexone along with SSRI's so I am not a doctor but yes. The issue is that this is Medication ASSISTED Treatment - so unless you resolve the underlying issues with the addiction, you can't just take a pill and just quit gambling/drinking/drugging. Yet. They are working on memory deletion as treatments as we speak.

Step work. Getting out of self. You gamble compulsively to try to compensate for what is truly wrong with self, but only makes it worse. Got to find the real reasons you gamble the way you do ie depression, anxiety, loneliness, fear, etc...and fix those and you will not need to gamble compulsively to try and make up for, or hide it if you truly ok with self.

Otters, it comes to a point where not only cannot you not live without it, you can't live with it. I know down deep at the end of the day, you are not happy betting $300 to win $1.50. The ride can be thrilling, but after it is over, how long does it take to get to sleep after that late night all in wager trying to get the $1.50 that was lost earlier. It is no fun. Lie in bed wide away at 2:00am.

Planning the big all in wagers around Walmart's hours making sure the game ends at least an hour and a half before Walmart closes. Shit sucks man.
