Kliff Kingsbury Will Be New Arizona Cardinals HC

The Cardinals are set to reach outside the box for their next head coach. Kliff Kingsbury is in Arizona finalizing a deal to become the franchise’s next sideline leader, Peter Schrager of Fox Sports reports (on Twitter).

This agreement should be completed soon, per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (Twitter link). Kingsbury met with the Jets about their HC opening, but it looks like the Cardinals are moving in to form a Kingsbury-Josh Rosen pairing, with Sam Darnold‘s next coach to be determined.

In an offseason geared around finding coaches that can help teams rejuvenate their offenses, this hire stands out.

Texas Tech fired Kingsbury after six seasons, and the 39-year-old offensive mind landed as USC’s offensive coordinator. The Trojans initially blocked Kingsbury from interviews with the Jets and Cards before allowing them, and it looks like the Pac-12 program will have to find another OC, again. Kingsbury has a small buy-out in his USC contract, per The Athletic’s Jay Glazer, who adds that the university has said Kingsbury did not resign (as rumors suggested he might after being blocked from Jets and Cardinals meetings).

The Cardinals ranked as the NFL’s worst offense, both in yardage and scoring, last season. They had previously not made a coach a one-and-done in more than 65 years. But this ineffectiveness and the team’s plunge toward 3-13 led to Steve Wilks’ ouster. Arizona scored the NFL’s second-most points in 2015 and ranked sixth as recently as 2016, but the Bruce Arians–Carson Palmer era ending gutted the franchise.

After Arizona went through a methodical search that ended with a late-January Wilks hire, the franchise is taking a gamble on Kingsbury’s innovative abilities.

Kingsbury convinced both Patrick Mahomes and Baker Mayfield to come to Lubbock, Texas, and led one of Division I’s most explosive attacks during his tenure. While the Red Raiders have traditionally deployed such potency on offense, Kingsbury once serving as one of many quarterbacks capable of posting big numbers, the NFL is gravitating increasingly toward college-based schemes. This made Kingsbury an attractive candidate, despite his recent firing and now-brief USC employment.

Patrick Mahomes was asked about his former coach Kliff Kingsbury about 2 hours ago before the news broke. Here is what Mahomes had to say about Kingsbury as a NFL head coach:

I like this move - he’s a great offensive mind coach - the NFL is all about offense now - This is good for Rosen- you rookies need to take notes - they better hired a good DC tho lol -

I think he falls flat on his face. At least McVay and Shanahan had NFL coaching experience. He might be good for the quarterback, but I think he'll have problems with the other 52 guys if he doesn't have a VERY strong and experienced supporting cast of coaches around him.

There was no way they were going hired a defensive coach - they have to see what Rosen is worth - I don’t think this is a bad move - Kingsbury knows offense -

Don't get me wrong. I would like him as an offensive coordinator, but not as a head coach. Too much responsibility too soon.

It is a four-year agreement that includes a fifth-year team option, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports

Kingsbury's probably going to lose every game by a score of about 70-56.

Apparently anyone can get a job in the NFL.

Kingsbury probably wore the shades... and gave the GM a reacharound?

It’s not like any other coaches was coaching any defense at Texas tech before he arrive - don’t be a foo - his main focus is rosen and the offense - he’s not going handle any defense

Says the guy with 10000 posts and still is not a pro. This shows you just how bad and desperate the Arizona front office really is. Had they really been interested in Kingsbury, why did they not make a move before he signed at USC? If you believe that this is a good move, you really do not know the NFL. This guy knows nothing about defenses, and could care less about them. Do you really think that Big 12 Style Football will work in the NFL? If so, you are desperate.

Did any coach at Texas tech care about defense before Kingsbury- Does mcvay have a say in defense for the rams ? He’s hired for his offensive knowledge- This hire will see what Rosen have in him

"Cardinals GM Steve Keim, who had a lot to do with hiring him, 'Kliff Kingsbury is a mans man, he can call plays. I believe he's a leader of men, he commands attention and his X's and 0's are second to none.'"

Good luck with Rosen. As a Trojan fan this Kliff with a K is dead to me.

Another perplexing awful hire. These teams are so clueless, no wonder they always suck.

I like the hire. You don’t have to recruit in the NFL. It’s about who is the smartest most innovative coach. Kliff will be fine. He’s a smart coach. He couldn’t win big at Texas Tech bc college is more about recruiting than anything else.

Seems like an odd choice but who knows until they play next season. I did laugh when I heard Kingsbury say he is proud to be part of such a great historic franchise.

Taking a wild guess that Kingsbury is the first college head coach to be fired and hired to be a NFL head coach within 2 months ever.
