Max Scherzer entered tonight's game with 290 strikeouts on the season needing to fan 10 in his final start of the year.
This is a huge milestone as on 17 pitchers have struck out 300 in a season and with this age of relievers starting games, and bullpens pitching the final four innings of games it may be a very long time before any pitcher strikes out 300 again in a season.
Well done Max, deGrom deserves the Cy Young, but Max had a monster too.

Chalk up another milestone for Max Scherzer. The Nats ace whiffed Marlins rookie Austin Dean for his 300th strikeout. Scherzer becomes the 17th pitcher since 1900 to rack up 300 K's in a season, and the fifth since 2000, joining Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling, Clayton Kershaw, and Chris Sale. He's also a lock to lead his league in punchouts for a fourth straight season. In the divisional era, only Johnson and Nolan Ryan have done that.
