Jury orders Rams to pay Reggie Bush $12.5 million

ST. LOUIS (AP/KMOV.com) – A St. Louis jury on Tuesday ordered the Los Angeles Rams to pay $12.5 million to Reggie Bush, the former NFL running back who was injured in a 2015 game at the dome.

Bush's attorney told News 4 the Rams were told to pay $4.95 million in compensatory damages and $7.5 million in punitive damages. The jury deliberated for about two hours.

"I think hopefully this sends a message that it's not ok to carelessly overlook things on the field like concrete that should not be there." Bush told News 4 as he left the courthouse.

Bush was playing for the San Francisco 49ers in November 2015 when he slipped and fell during a game after being pushed out of bounds at the former Edward Jones Dome. Bush slipped on a concrete surface about 11 yards behind the 49ers bench. The suit says the area had been nicknamed the “concrete ring of death.”

"I didn't want to have to do this but I also didn't want my career to be ended this way either," Bush said.

The Rams moved to Los Angeles the following season.

Friday morning, the St. Louis judge dismissed the city as defendants in the civil trial, leaving the Rams the only remaining defendant.

In the motion of dismissal, the judge said there was no evidence the St. Louis Regional Sports Convention Center (RSA) or the Regional Convention and Visitor's Commission (CVC) were negligent in Bush's injury and, as owners of the dome, neither organizations are liable for the dangerous condition of the stadium. The motion also said the RSA and CVC cannot be jointly liable for the dome, saying there must be "exclusive control" to hold them liable as a "public entity's property" and exclusive control over the dome does not exist.

News 4 spoke with Bush's attorney about the decision. The attorney said he agreed with the decision to drop the city as a defendant because he and Bush found the Rams responsible for not maintaining the facility to safety standards.

I played a team in high school with fire ant beds on the field. We were getting torn up. Lots of emotional damage. Maybe I should sue

I played baseball in high school. A player on the team slid into second and won money in a lawsuit because it was a base held down with a spike. The kid slid into the spike and his leg went into it tearing up his tendons.

    He deserved every dollar.

I can't say that I disagree with this ruling because having exposed concrete in an area where it is possible for players to end up is hazardous. I may have disagreed if the exposed area was a longer distance away, but in this case it was 11 yards from the bench.

eh seems far enough to me. this just opens up tons of schools to lawsuits. i remember playing some el paso team and their field had almost no grass and was lumpy everywhere. they only had one straight goal post too lol. seems like i see a lot of colleges with slippery areas much closer to the sidelines that everyone falls on.

    Why wasn't NFL a co-defendant?

I'm sure LA Rams will challenge the ruling, citing a biased jury. Crap way for a career to end. Bush was such an exciting college player, kind of disappointed in the pros. So many teams.

His career prior to that incident was already on the decline. That freak injury was probably the best thing to happen to him.

Punitive damages seem to be a bit high no???

Why should he get more than he would have earned due a slippery floor so far from the playing surface?

And absolving local authorities on a technicality sounds a bit tenuous too. If I could avoid any claim for negligence by simply having two owners I could be a billionaire in no time.

I do not think it is unreasonable to say 11 yards from the bench is too close for a player running at full speed on the field (as he should be) to slow down sufficiently. And Bush was actually trying to slow down and still slipped.

I think the exposed concrete is the issue. If a floor had been there, he probably would have gotten nothing because at least there would have been an attempt to cover up the concrete with a softer surface. And I would not call 11 yards from the bench "so far from the playing surface".

I was thinking it's about 25m from the playing surface total? I don't think it takes a 100m sprinter 25 metres to stop?

I can't really argue against that video evidence it can happen though. I still wonder how it equates to more than his actual loss in punitive damages though. Is it that glaringly negligent?

I remember seeing that play. McCown got hurt there too. Think he got a similar amount. In Missouri 1/2 of punitive damage award goes to the state for victim relief funds. That’s why punitive damages are often so high.

When all is said and done he probably gets 5 million, which is about what he would’ve gotten in contracts for rest of career. He was on his final legs.
