    Senator Orrin Hatch

From what I'm reading it looks as though Hatch is going to try and make sports betting difficult for the states to implement. Whispers are already popping up that his new bill will block ANY use of mobile devices or computers to place wagers.

It'll be tough to do; the SCOTUS just gave the states a huge degree of autonomy to control sports betting. That will most surely extend to mobile wagering.

The federal government has 2 options in essence. 1. Ban ALL states from sports wagering (won't happen because of Nevada) or 2. Make it extremely difficult for states to implement and run sports books.

Hatch could easily introduce a bill that prohibits all SPORTS betting wagers unless you place the wager in person.

FYI...even though it is legal now to have U.S. sports books it is still illegal for banks to knowingly pass your transactions through to off shore accounts for the purpose of betting. That law was not struck down.

Hatch waited to late he never thought it would fly thru the SC. It’s going to be impossible to take it away from states who will already have in place before Congress even gets around to discussing it

Hatch is an 80-some year old mormon from Utah that is out of touch with reality and today's world.
Who names their son "Orrin" anyways?

Orrin Hatch is retiring in 7 months. It is too late at this point to get anything like this up and running.

There are so many states that want sports gambling that all their reps and senators can just stall and stall and make these bills never go anywhere.

That is the most likely scenario. Still would not be surprised if they tried to ban college sports from being wagered on.

Any state that doesn't want gambling can still make it legal and will just tax the proceeds at a ridiculous percent and charge an application fee in the 10's of millions.

Books can't operated with a 40% tax rate without charging prohibitive vig.

Unless the state is very friendly, I think the business model of a book will fail in the public domain.

At that rate some of the biggest sportsbook dollars will leave the sports markets for better investment opportunity.

I suppose if Vegas and Pinny and BM stay cheaper, maybe there's a place for those dollars still.

    This. This this this. This.

It is easy to forbid something from being implemented. It is far, far more difficult to take something away. Even PASPA was smart enough to be written in a manner whereby it didn't take anything away from the states which already allowed sports gambling.

Well Congress is sure to create uniform rules of some type that streamlines oversight and protects college sports...

That said, beyond banning mobile, wire or telephone betting I'm not sure what- absent a ban- they can do

With 30 plus states set to implement, every citizen is likely to have a betting option within a 3 hour drive now

yeah I dont get the excitement for most people. We wont have gambling any time soon in florida.

It has to be approved by the state Legislature which doesnt meet until next year, a constitutional amendment, and deal with the Seminole Tribe

Supreme Court ruling doesn't mean sports betting will come to Florida quickly — or at all
