Most disappointing MLB team so far

10% into the season, still very early. But which team has disappointed you so far? (homerism or not)

Baltimore Orioles at 5-13 record? (soon to be 5-14 in progress)

    Washington Nationals at 9-10 record?

    Chicago Cubs at 7-8 record?

    LA Dodgers 8-9 at record?

    NY Yankees at 8-8 record?

    Cleveland Indians at 9-7 record?

    Other?

I would say Yankees. Biased because I watched the game Tuesday, where they looked like a little league team.

maybe Houston Astros at 12-7 record? Just hit into a triple-play groundball in Seattle, top of 4th inning....Evan Gattis wandered off first base thinking the double-play (step on third base, throw to second base) made 3 total outs in the inning, but it was only two down until they tagged him out!

Lol what? 12-7 is disappointing? That puts them on pace for over 100 wins. I knew you were dumb but you might be even slower than I originally thought.

^^^^comparing to other division leaders at the present time:

    Boston Red Sox 15-2

LA Angels 13-5 (AL West division ahead of Astros)

    NY Mets 13-4

It's early guys, wait for the All Star break and then you can determine who's under performing. Some teams start slow but finish strong.

and t-wizzle, can you let it go of our e-beef you imagined? Say something constructive, or nothing at all.

I didn't even diss you, I was making a joke that you and Mr. Munny were on the same pick one night...it won by the way.

    Fine by me. Beef squashed.

That doesn’t mean that I can’t be critical of your post. 12-7 is a good start.

I'd say the Dodgers. I'm not sure why people are so surprised about the Yankees. They're pitching other than Severino is terrible and they'll probably set the record for Ks by an offense this year. As a team they will hit a ton of bombs, but most will be solo shots. Typical Yankee hype.

Yankees without a doubt,it's early true but they'll have to makeup a ton of ground on the Red Sox just so they don't end up with the wild card again.

Indians aren't in terrible shape,9-7 the division is pretty much down to them and the Twins.

I agree. In fact, get ready for the runs that a couple of those teams hit even before the break.

You can still say, to this early point, who is disappointing but even then what does that mean?

Records mean so little right now so let's look at something more meaningful from a betting perspective.

This table shows the overall money won or lost by a fan had they blindly bet to win $100 (which is a poor money management strategy when compared to a flat risk strategy, but sadly more posters will relate to the first one)…
Obviously numbers can vary from different closing lines used, but you get the idea…

    Team P & L
    Boston $892
    Arizona $834
    NY Mets $770
    Atlanta $553
    LA Angels $531
    Pittsburgh $496
    Toronto $463
    Colorado $388
    Minnesota $327
    Seattle $317
    Philadelphia $183
    St. Louis $114
    Milwaukee $76
    Houston -$84
    San Francisco -$84
    Texas -$125
    Cleveland -$207
    Detroit -$219
    Oakland -$225
    Miami -$235
    Chi Cubs -$320
    Washington -$342
    NY Yankees -$352
    San Diego -$353
    LA Dodgers -$445
    Baltimore -$576
    Chi White Sox -$587
    Tampa Bay -$804
    Kansas City -$883
    Cincinnati -$1,133

As you can see, Cincinnati is quite disappointing from a betting perspective and you can see where other teams stand relative to each other.

This table shows the same money for home games…

    Team P & L
    Arizona $405
    Boston $392
    Atlanta $390
    Philadelphia $251
    Minnesota $233
    Seattle $198
    Toronto $167
    NY Mets $138
    Cleveland $58
    Pittsburgh $1
    Houston -$43
    LA Angels -$59
    Oakland -$93
    San Francisco -$115
    Detroit -$193
    NY Yankees -$231
    Baltimore -$241
    St. Louis -$241
    Milwaukee -$246
    Colorado -$267
    LA Dodgers -$268
    Chi Cubs -$278
    Tampa Bay -$369
    Chi White Sox -$388
    Miami -$410
    Texas -$529
    Washington -$562
    Cincinnati -$569
    Kansas City -$604
    San Diego -$613

Those teams losing over 5 units already have been pretty disappointing to the home betting base.

To complete the analysis, here is the same money for away games…

    Team P & L
    Colorado $655
    NY Mets $632
    LA Angels $590
    Boston $500
    Pittsburgh $495
    Arizona $429
    Texas $404
    St. Louis $355
    Milwaukee $322
    Toronto $296
    San Diego $260
    Washington $220
    Miami $175
    Atlanta $163
    Seattle $119
    Minnesota $94
    San Francisco $31
    Detroit -$26
    Houston -$41
    Chi Cubs -$42
    Philadelphia -$68
    NY Yankees -$121
    Oakland -$132
    LA Dodgers -$177
    Chi White Sox -$199
    Cleveland -$265
    Kansas City -$279
    Baltimore -$335
    Tampa Bay -$435
    Cincinnati -$564

You can’t have disappointment without expectation. Sometimes it’s best to set the expectation based on the previous year. Are they performing better or worse at the same time of season or as a continuation of last year’s season? Offseason moves can also influence the expectation.

Understanding expectation in relation to not just money but any relevant stats and then monitoring the status is a great way to see where a team has been and can also signal turning points and where a team is headed.

I don’t know about you, but any indicators of where a team is headed or its future performance is always welcome in my betting lab.

    K,

One thing you didn't mention is some of those teams that have under performed are ones that should be looked at for value being the public will shun those teams. Also, fading the ones that have over performed.

Agreed. It's not just the money, major commonly used stats too. Together they sway the market just enough to give some of that value before the market catches up. Then on to the next team or factor.
