Remember when you couldn't get internet on your phone and you had to check scores?

Like 10 years ago. That was torture.

Would have to call a Sportsline service that would report the scores to you every inning or so.

Especially horrible if you were out in public and had to sneak into a bathroom stall like a loser just to check scores in private.

    How things have changed.

There was a guy I used to work with who had a pager that updated scores. Another used to call into his book all day checking lines and scores. His user was Tiger____ some random series of numbers. It was hilarious.

Those were the days. More suspense waiting to hear the score come out. Granted, I rarely gamble on something if it’s not on TV.

Yes, all the tycoons had the sports pagers. The subscription fees were quite high, if I recall correctly.

I had one of those sports score pagers, it stopped working several years ago after one of those hurricanes.
I still have it somewhere. This was the one. Cost $100 and had free score updates.

The worst was the score would go by on the ticker and your team is up 5-2 in the 6th so you are all happy. Then 20 minutes later you look up and now are down 6-5 in bottom 9. You go from happy to wanting to throw a chair through the fukin window. At least now you can see it unfold in real time so it didn't such a dick punch.

What did the guys before cell phones, internet and espn do? They have to wait til the paper came out the next day to get scores, then meet the bookie to collect or pay up?

That's funny, I was just thinking about that today. I used to have one of the sports pagers and I was remembering how I used to be in my college classes with that thing sitting on my desk. I never got harassed by the teachers, was wondering if I could get away with that today.

Been checking scores since this Millennium ? In-fact I use to work @ Sportline.com (CBS Affiliate) & post the live scoring. Coolest job of my life & that’s where I found my 1st bookie & online sports books. Everybody there smoked weed @ break time we were always “lit”. Imagine watching a sports game & getting paid 50 dollars each game ! That only lasted a year or so & they went to 12 dollars an hour which was damn near half the pay. This was back in 2001 I was 19. We would schedule our games a week in advance & the person who had the least mistakes had first dibs on the games. Good times, I also sold picks on Vegas Insider way back when with the same company & had access to all the top cappers on the site.

I was about 21 and working at Service Merchandise to pay for college. Every break, I would run out to the pay phone and call the old 976-1313 and when the football score changed so drastically (not in my favor), I'd go back to work demoralized!. I have one. I have another one. It would be listed as a "local call" on the phone bill and my mother got the bill and says " how come we have 212 local calls?" She was going to check the numbers. I had to tell the truth. My stomach was rumbling. She was tough on me.
