Would Legalized Sports Betting Help States Get Out of the Hole? - WSJ

The Supreme Court is expected to rule soon on whether to allow legalized sports betting across the country, and many states are lining up at the gate to cash in on the possible tax revenue and job creation.

Millions of people regularly wager on college and professional games, from office pools to internet gambling to placing bets with a bookie. About $150 billion in sports bets are placed each year, according to estimates from American Gaming Association President Geoff Freeman.

What's the average age of the people on the Supreme Court? My guess is... most of them have almost zero knowledge of Sportsbetting. AND... most of them have no idea what gambling even is.

I think legalization is definitely the direction we are heading... and it's the right direction. But I doubt it will happen anytime soon. The Lottery takes in BAZILLIONS of dollars and their payout is only 50%(meaning your Expected Value is -50% every time you play The Lottery). If Sportsbetting were legal it's payouts would have to be WAY better than 50%. States would have to figure out a way to compete with offshore books while at the same time not drive The Lottery out of business. I realize it's 2 completely different animals... but I think people would eventually figure out that if you want to hit a "Jackpot" you're far better off blindly betting a huge parlay than you are playing The Lottery.

don't get me wrong, i want it to be legalized for the competition

anyone that's not a fukkin loser dipshit knows that competition in any market is good

7 cent lines on dimes is about as good as it gets, but maybe competition forces them to add a cash bonus program or some shit

Not sure if it will help California. Every election a prop gets put on the ballot to tax A which will help B, and the next time around we still have problem B and the solution is to tax more of A.

So... basically what Fantasy Sports currently charges? 15c vig works for Fantasy Sports because the format of it is almost identical to the Lottery's format. It's much easier to hide the high Vig in this type of format. High vigs are going to be much more difficult to hide in ATS Sportsbetting. I think they would have to lower the Vig and I don't think they would be willing to... at least not anytime soon.

It doesn’t matter how much tax revenue states raise. They will always find ways to overspend. Thus, they will always be in the hole.

They would take a small hit but not much. Most gamblers who play offshore would continue to do so for many reasons. The local bookies would be the ones taking a hit.

Even if it passes we're looking at 5 years before it gets going

Government will screw it up somehow by too many regulations to the point where most states will see -120 or higher on football and basketball spreads
