Eric Hosmer Gets His 8 Year Contract - Boras Wins Another One

The Padres have agreed to sign first baseman Eric Hosmer, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. The contract is an eight-year deal that includes an opt-out clause after the fifth season, according to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi (via Twitter). The deal contains a full no-trade clause for the first three seasons and then limited no-trade protection afterwards, Bleacher Report’s Scott Miller reports (Twitter links). Hosmer will be paid $20MM in each of the first five seasons and $13MM in the three remaining years, plus a $5MM signing bonus. The $144MM total figure represents the largest contract in the history of the Padres franchise. Hosmer is represented by the Boras Corporation.

    never ever pay sluggers

They do not have impact on a team like a pitcher

Mike Trout perfect example..Angels terrible and he is good

that park either played a lot smaller last year, or the balls played larger

either way....What are the Padres doing??? don't they know nobody wants them to succeed?

absolutely correct. never believe a player who says all i want to do is go somewhere where i have a chance to win. with 30 teams the chances of winning are remote and that contract is far more important to attain than being in some dumb parade and getting a worthless ring that you'll never sell unless you go broke.

Giant waste of resources. The Padres never learn. Theyd have been better off keeping Rizzo and a bunch of other players over the years and paying them. Instead they go out and blow their load on a slugger that wont help them compete.

so what. as long as he can ring up a few .280 20 80 years the fans won't get on him and he can enjoy his cash and weather out there. winning is of secondary importance.

Hosmer seems happy to play the remaining years of his career on a team that will never compete in post season.

Hosmer brings a lot to the table including being bilingual, hard worker and great teammate...he will help a lot with mentoring all the youngsters along with gold glove defense, high on base % and high level hitter.

A lot of the young Padres have power but swing and miss far too often. Given the fact that the Padres hit a lot of homers last season and many of the team are feast of famine type hitters, it doesn't upset me that he is not a power hitter. The rest of the lineup has a decent amount of power and he should be able to help them with their approach at the plate and work ethic on and off the field.

I hope this works out but it is nice to see the team actually stepping up and trying to put a decent product on the field for once...

they may make the playoffs again some day but he's happier when he opens up his bank statement in the ensuing months and years. if they contend he's ok with that. i'm sure he hopes that will happen but if it doesn't doubt if he demands to be traded to a contender.

This looks like a great deal for both sides.
Hosmer is a bit overrated offensively (he's still a solid bat, but not elite- and he's gonna hit under 20 hr's now for sure), but he brings a lot to the table with his great glove, hard play, and locker room leadership.
Gonna be a good guy to have in the clubhouse especially if they start winning, but the Padres winning anytime soon isn't very likely.
    True definition of a gamer.
Would have loved to see the Mets give him that contract he got from San Diego. Him and Thor would have been best buds.

Won't be a surprise if they make the playoffs; but it will only be for 1 year and then players will want too much money and they will trade them away during the 2nd year of the player's arbitration.

Then back to rebuilding for 10 years.

    - Good signing. Long-game move. Most of you don't understand long-game stuff. ^

    - SD could use one more veteran, that's not a washed up pitcher. Will help a lot.

    - The signing debunks the collusion myth some, which is great.

    - KC didn't get on the rebuild train fast enough, now IMO they're screwed for awhile.

    Terrible deal.

The guy won't be able to focus with all that San Diego pussy surrounding him.

He'll be lucky to hit .230 in that ballpark.

KC's ballpark is arguably worse for HR hitters.

Pussy way better in SD though, you're right there.

Though the Royals reportedly made Eric Hosmer a contract offer that would’ve stood as the largest in franchise history, GM Dayton Moore says that the club’s long time first baseman and fan favorite “took the better offer” in choosing the Padres (via Rustin Dodd of the Kansas City Star). One big difference between the two offers was that Kansas City never included an opt-out clause; Hosmer’s deal with the Padres contains one after his fifth season with them. Of course, that contract is also believed to guarantee him more years and overall dollars than the offers he reportedly received from the Royals. In addition, the offer from the Royals was apparently more “back-loaded”. Moore adds that he had a “pretty good sense about four days ago” that Hosmer wouldn’t be returning. Though he still held out hope, it was at that point that he began to “develop a mindset” that the club was probably going in a different direction.
