Novak needs to start skipping clay season. Then he'd win 3 a year.

that's a good point. but only older players (Fed) or poosssies should even consider skipping clay season.

i remember back in the day, Lendl started skipping the clay season late in his career around 1990 and 1991 so he could gear up for Wimbledon. he wanted that title so badly but he never won wimby. made it to two finals and a handful of semifinals but he could never quite get over the hump.

little known fact: Lendl made it to 8 straight US Open finals spanning 1982 to 1989 (inclusive). he won 3 of them. making it to 8 straight grand slam finals at any venue back in those days with so much parity in men's tennis, was a truly remarkable feat.

that said, Lendl did seem like a major league prick though

Murray won his first Wimbledon after skipping Roland Garros.

On topic: rumors that Djokovic will undergo a surgery, Nadal pretty much a lock for year end #1.

He is the heavy favorite, perhaps Stefanos can pull the upset.

Sadly they still do seem to have a petty agenda against him, without any actual credibility as any smart person knows.

Anyway not sure what is the point of continuing to bump up this thread considering he's the favourite for the Australian Open.

Coincidentaly, those 2 out of 3 times Djokovic was injured. Winning against players two tiers below, just like Federer did pre 2009, is not winning.

Everyone with a brain knew joker wasn't done winning when the OP started the thread. The question is how many will he finish with. You've said anywhere from 18 to 20 majors. You have a range not an actual number.

I said 13. He has obviously beaten that as he has 16 but we'll see how many he has left in him.

You're right. The 7 majors rafa has won away from RG don't matter.

Indeed, that being said it doesn't feel like Rafa is the best player at the moment, this goes to Novak. Don't think Rafa ever beats Novak again off clay.

Federer will be stuck at 20. Race is between Nadal and Djokovic with slight edge to Djokovic.

Older, knees weak, barely beat Medvedev at USO. I'm 100% Rafa wins this years RG and next year he's toast.

Would back Thiem to win the French Open. After Rafa beat Medvedev at the Us open I had the feeling it was his last slam title.

you're aware that medvedev was the 5 seed right? also Medvedev had the most hardcourt wins of any player in 2018 (38)

that was not exactly a weak hardcourt player who rafa beat.

Ppl on SBR told me this about Rafa about 5-6 years ago. You can look up the threads. I was only one who said Rafa was just getting warmed up.

    Dominated those threads.

Knee jerk reactions are king on this site.

    True sign of amateur hour.

Rafa is getting older, true, but Thiem is no where near his level. Frankly, it's not even close. Until I see some sign that Rafa has fallen off, I am not betting against the top players.

All these other young guys are straight losers. Struggling to beat 40 year old men. Thiem can't even take a set off Rafa in a major final if it's not on clay. Even on clay he gets bitch made.

Rafa is far superior in every aspect, and will be nexdt year too. Nothing will change.

I'm aware of that but 2013 version of Rafa would straight set 2019 Medvedev.

    it'd be sweet to tie roger's 20 but it's a long shot.
djokovic seems to be playing at an amazing level and he is without a doubt the best ever when in form.

rafa can't run as fast or much as he used to and roger has capitalized on it for the last 2 years.
even if it's roger in the final, it's 50/50 and who knows what's gonna happen against krygios and thiem?

Not Thiem for instance. I like his chances in the quarters, expect a tough match.

Can't see Novak losing to Rafa if they both make the final. Nadal just had a grinding match against Kyrgios. It won't get any easier for him gainst Thiem and possibly Wawarinka in the semis.

On the other hand, Joker plays Raonic and probably Fed. Neither match will be as grinding as Nadal's IMO.

I think Raonic and/or Wawarinka with their big games are bigger threats to Djokovic than Fed or Nadal IMO.
