    It depends on who you ask. Several players, Belichick and Butler have given different takes. You would think after getting roasted all game they would have put him in at some point, just to try and shake their defense up.

    Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said it wasn’t a disciplinary decision and defensive coordinator Matt Patricia said it came down to personnel and the packages the Patriots needed to counter the Eagles offense.

    Rowe claims that he didn’t know that he would be starting over Butler until kickoff and that Butler had been a part of the Patriots defensive gameplan all week in practice. Devin McCourty said that the team knew that Butler wasn’t going to be involved before tonight.


    But when Chung was injured, the Patriots opted to play Johnson Bademosi and Jordan Richards over Butler, so it’s clear Butler was far down the Patriots list of defensive backs.

    The guy is a starter all year and decide to change it now seems curious. They were getting absolutely torched, if Butler could have helped prevent even only one of those 3rd or 4th down conversions, it might have ended differently.

    What they were doing wasn't working at all, why not put him in at some point.

    Butler definitely could have made some game changing plays on defense side. Only time will tell us the story behind this cold case mystery.

    must of been last minute decision the backup didn't even know he was starting and butler took all the first team reps, sometimes those really smart people over think things, can't believe at halftime bill didn't make any adjustments they did move gilmore to alshon and he got shut down 2nd half but nobody was able cover ertz or agholor 2nd half

    as well they should. detroit players don't want to play for someone who brings in the patriots work ethic, rigid discipline and get casted to the sidelines if you have a bad game type of coach. they want light practices and then play hard on sunday's. they don't want to waste their spare time watching film and studying. just be a first round knockout once every 3 years and cash those gamechecks is the attitude of most players anyway.

    Belichecks ego is bigger than his desire to win. He gets a hard on by proving its his way or the highway. He purposely tries to prove he can win with anybody (which he cant). Look at his head coaching record PRIOR to Brady. Avg at best
