    BTC Futures trading starts

    ...later today.

    http://www.cmegroup.com/trading/equi...x/bitcoin.html

My broker offers commodity trading but it's not enabled. Hopefully get it turned on tomorrow.

I think this could be big.

Sounds fuking dangerous. 50:1 margin or more on gold or crude is bad enough.

Sooooo many newbs will get margin called on swings while the big banks are untouchable with their mountain of fiat currency.

    Hard to say.

Over time I think it helps stabilize the market.

I would love to hold more if I could hedge it against a massive loss.

I'd look to sell like a December '18 contract against my stash and get like locked in at $20,000?? Maybe $22,000??

You can already trade the equivalent of bitcoin futures at books like betonline. I think these financial tools will make trading bitcoin much more volatile, futures are at their core about leverage, and trading futures enables you to buy a lot without putting up much capital.

What's your point, futures contracts enable you to control an asset without putting up 100% of the capital. Futures are a tool for leverage.

Most firms are not offering it right now and you need a minimum of 17,000 just for one contract

What really matters is not the trading at all, but whether contracts
are fulfilled, meaning carried to term and demanding CONVERSION
    into REAL BTC by law.
That could make the price explode over 50k.

Not seeing any volume at the CME. Or maybe they haven't started trading?

Anyone have a better link to see BTC futures trading?

This is not true. CBOE is cash settled. Meaning that if held to expiry, the difference between future and spot is settled by money, not by delivery.

    "
    Why Trade XBT Futures

Settle to a Single Auction Price

XBT futures is a cash-settled contract that settles to a single, tradeable auction price. In designing XBT futures, Cboe leveraged its significant product development expertise to design an instrument that allows participants to implement trading strategies in a manner to which they are accustomed. The single price settlement process gives participants the option of using XBT futures to hedge their exposure in underlying bitcoin or gain exposure to traded bitcoin prices without holding bitcoin."

    Same for CME

    Settlement Method: Financially Settled

The clearing house is not going to leave themselves open to having to go and physically buy bitcoin or to take delivery of bitcoins. Too messy. Rather just settle it with dollars.

Its basically only going to be used by institutions

Contract too big for the average joe to trade

But it’s the institutions ppl are worried about

Nobody in btc gives a Fukk about the average joe, do care about Goldman Sachs

For now everything seems extremely stable and nothing forecasts that will will change in the next 48 hours

    Called a few brokers.

So far only found AMitrade and MBtrading(starts dec 18). Min $50k in account to trade these babies.

Etrade and really everyone else is going to evaluate and add if there are no glitches at a later date.

    Keep it small

1 Week or less contracts are very hard to beat
