Around the water cooler question: What if a playoff team's plane crashes?

I wouldn't wish it on anybody of course. But what would happen...if say the Warriors plane goes down on the way home from Portland?
    Playoffs canceled?
    Portland default advances?

Personally I don't think they can cancel the playoffs. I do believe they would push everything back a week or so, and then Portland default advances.

I believe the major sports leagues have written rules that cover such an event.

Why do you have such terrible thoughts? I think rest of season cancelled. No champion this year.

Would they do this mid playoffs tho?

The National Basketball Association (NBA) contingency plan activates if five or more players on a team "die or are dismembered".[1][4] A special "disaster draft" would be held in which other NBA teams could only protect five players,[4][5] so that quality sixth men would be available. No more than one player would be drafted from a team.[1]

I dont think you are playoff eligible if you switch teams after March something though.

Id suspect thats a before the season starts scenario, definitely not the playoffs. If that happened no team would want to finish the playoffs or probably even season out of heartbreak and respect.

Strange question to talk about around the water cooler. I'd assume they would cancel the whole thing out of respect, but who knows. Hopefully never will know.

So the NBA would allow the survivors to "cannibalize" the opposing teams?

Wow. Never thought of it that way... but I guess it protects the owner's investment into the league. Crazy if you think about it. Clearly the NBA is all about entertainment.
So when is a plane going down in the Eastern Conference so they can fix things?

    (Kidding guys.)

I think players would come together and prob forfeit playing rest of the year crazy would cost NBA some bread, but could they really force them to play it out? maybe in court idk hope it never happens

Not gonna lie, this sick thought has entered my mind too many times before.

But I find it hard to believe they would cancel the playoffs - as brutal as it sounds, its business and business does not stop because some members pass away...at best they would postpone a bit.

They would postpone and get the dead layed down.....

but then it would be like....Game On...

coming off like the dead guys would want us to play on.....

I also don't there is any cancellation of playoffs. A few days of mourning yes but its not fair to fans of other teams and the teams themselves who worked hard to get a shot at the championship to just get everything cancelled. Also the league will lose way to much money if they cancel.

Yes. Rules are in place, but for the regular season. Playoffs could be a commissioners' call.

It's a business, so there would be no cancellation of the playoffs...Just like when 9/11 happened, MLB did not cancel the rest of the season or a month, and neither did the NFL...Both leagues postponed one week of play and added that week to the end of the season...

The NBA would likely postpone the playoffs for a week and allow the team to prepare their D-League affiliate team, maybe sign a couple of overseas free agents or sign players who couldn't make an NBA squad during the 2016-17 who are also free agents and have a throw-together roster/team to play the next round...

There is too much money out there, too many billions of network money at stake to just cancel the playoffs when there are still several good matchups left for the viewers to tune in to...

    Sounds harsh...Sounds cruel...Sounds uncaring...

    But it's a business...

If a Fortune 500 company loses their top 20 people in a plane crash, they mourn, and then they either move the 20-best qualified people up to fill those spots or hire from the outside to fill some or all of those spots...

Same concept...Golden State would have a week to put together the best squad they could and play the next round...

in russia in the early 1980s the media only learned about a major airplane crash because a soccer team disappeared from the standings/schedule

i remember it distinctly although my recollection may be wrong.. curious if it's googleable..

anyway, i presume next round is a walkover for the other team as doubt GSW or their fans would necessarily want to field a team of new players....... with NBDL and perhaps healthy players not part of travelling squad it might be feasible to field new team with good famililarity with each other, fan base etc.
