My dad is a vet and he is appalled...the idea of people owning and being able to carry automatic weapons of the kind that are used on battlefields is absurd, especially when they are well trained to use them....

Your father is a smart man. I am a vet and find no need for these guns in anyone's hand but police or military. I was qualified as an expert with a m14a-1 assault rifle and think it is a joke that you can buy an armalite 15 or any other knock off at a gun store.

I thought he shot a bunch of people as well? The organizers screwed up as they should have had all those streets cut off. Yes, crazy people will get away with crazy shit but we need to be more vigilant with all the ways possible. We do a good job in the US monitoring dangerous chemicals. I wish we'd do more monitoring of people that buy guns but that won't happen.

Well until a copy cat killer comes along then I will worry about that. If you spend so much time worrying about the negatives than your life will pass you by.Those assholes have been killing each other over there since the beginning of time but it wasn't on the news Police have been killing black men since the 1800's. It is definitely wrong and as someone who has lived as a minority. As someone that has lived with a black women for 7 years. As someone who has worked in the ghetto since 1984 I have seen it.I have empathy with them and understand but don't agree with it.

chico, you have kids these days that get depressed over facebook and twitter followers. A coworker told me that there were kids at his kids' school that were having parent teacher conferences about not getting enough likes on posts. I hate to be the old man that yells at clouds, but I feel like these younger kids are soft. They have grown up with instant access to everything. You have to write a paper in school: you can go online and grab one that's done for you. You need information: it's at your fingertips on your smart phone. You want to watch a movie or show: you can steal it online. Socialization skills, patience, and discipline are a thing of the past. Disappointment breeds toughness and creates resilience.

We must be the same age.

Worries me how much parents today 'protect' their kids without realizing it also stops their kids learning to handle 'danger' themselves.

A punch in the mouth from another uncoordinated 12 year old is one of the best lessons kids used to learn about crossing the line. Not much else works with pre-teen boy and leaving it until later doesn't have the same effect, once the ego is too far developed to take the lesson in fully.

I have nephews and nieces. But they are pretty tough. We were taught at an early age to pick up and bust somebody if we can't handle the situation. One nephew who wrecked on his motorcycle in the 4 th grade. Well come 6th grade 3 8th graders who had him by 60lbs and several inches tried that stuff with him. He smacked one with clinched fist with a rock. After serving his 10 day suspension these kids never bothered him again.

Boy I'm kind of stunned by a ton of responses here. I don't even know how to respond to any of it, so I'll just say my statement then leave. I spent 23 years of my life...3 wars..lost friends...got hit..yes I'm disabled by VA standards but teach daily. Those who are making comments of what have we done? Well when you have over a million people trained for combat not all of them are angels, choir boys, and trusting souls just like any other business, healthcare, or industry. But two individuals have done something heinous and all of us are maniacs or mentally unstable. Probably a really misguided view.

Those that know me, or get to know me find I'm quite normal...shocking that I mentor officers daily, teach, and don't live in a tent on the tundra killing things to keep my scopes sighted in. This past weekend I put a ramp on a 87 year old WWII Vets home...guy made me seem like a puss.

I told Booya this before, and I normally don't mention my business in public but today is the exception to the rule. I lost my brother-in-law, a police officer, in the line of duty in Mesa, AZ so this this whole subject hits way too close to home for me. I go to the valley twice a year to a highway cleanup project for a two mile stretch named after him. If you live near there try not to throw stuff out the window...at least your drug needles and broken bottles.

I would just say to everyone that not everyone fits a profile that the media, some here, and conspiracy theorists may draw up. I've only had one PTSD episode since Afghanistan and jj didn't make it.

Most veterans come home as better people. Military service makes you a better man. The ones criticizing the veterans need to enlist and experience military service or STFU talking about war.

Kraken makes a good point about vets.

But the point he is really trying to make is that it is politically incorrect to single out any one group of people.

Political correctness is a slippery slope.

    Greaser is right

While this thread wasn't in jest, I certainly don't believe our military vets are the problem. I also don't think blacks are the problem, nor whites. There are issues between the African American community and law enforcement, there are issues between whites and blacks, but these pale in comparison to what I think the biggest problem in America today is

The biggest problem we have in America today is male violence. I don't even know how anyone could really make an argument against this.

Men are ultimately the problem, we're the ones shooting everyone, almost all rapes, assaults, shootings, stabbings, etc... are by men. That's a simple, undeniable fact. I personally believe it's a cultural problem in the way we raise our young boys to have no emotions, to not cry, to tough it out, to rough house, etc.... I'm quite aware of the biology of males and that does not explain what takes place in America.

Maybe, but they got trained in armed warfare and tactics and so forth. Probably just wanted badly to put their training in action. Yes, ex-military commit disproportionate violence, including against themselves.

The Colorado mass murderer wasn't in the military, neither the Virginia Tech shooter, or the Sandy Hook shooter and certainly not the San Bernandino shooter.

AMEN-- I could not have said it any better--- just to be free to go where and when we please-- and make our own decisions instead of following orders constantly. Perhaps a class in high school studying the difference between our civil rights and the UCMJ. gl all

No, it's common in the middle east, Mexico, Central and South America and Asian countries. We also see extremely high incidences of male violence in those countries, as well as Muslim dominated countries. Most of the world suffers the consequences of male violence. Imagine tomorrow if not one man committed a crime in the world, just imagine that. There's a good chance that tomorrow not a single person would be murdered or assaulted. It's sickening

Every time a black man commits a crime or shoots cops, people say "open your eyes, it's the blacks committing the crimes!" and then those arguing will say "Nope, white men commit a ton of crime as well, including shooting, rapes, etc..."

But it's all focused on race, not sex

The constant is that men are involved, but no men want to talk about that, they want to blame it on someone else.

If you look at it objectively, world wide male violence
