It was a Super Tuesday not only for Donald Trump, the Republican front-runner who took a decisive lead in his party's race for the White House, but for gamblers in the United Kingdom who got a big payday by betting on him.
Paddy Power, the venerable UK gambling company with a long tradition of making book on U.S. elections, announced Wednesday it's paying out more than $140,000 to customers who wagered the billionaire tycoon would capture the 2016 GOP presidential nomination.
"Since 1988 the candidate to clean up on Super Tuesday has always gone onto win their party's nomination," company spokesman Paddy Power said in a press release.
"Good news for Paddy Power punters, if you backed The Donald, come and get your cash – we're paying out," Power said. "Bad news for the world, this sh*t just got real."
"From initial odds of 100/1 to secure the ticket in 2012, Trump was cut into 40/1 after he announced his intention to run for office in June 2015," according to a press release from the company. "Since then, Trump's odds have tumbled quicker than Jennifer Lawrence at an awards party and bettors have backed him all the way down to heavily odds on."
With more than 1,000 individual bets placed, Trump "has dominated the GOP nominee market" with more than half of bettors favoring him, according to the company.
"Notable bets include $600 at 40/1 (returning $24,600), $1,500 at 25/1 (returning £$39,000) and last week the largest bet of the campaign to date, $21,000 at 1/5 (returning $25,200)," the company said.
While Trump is still a long way from getting the nomination, however, Paddy Power is paying out because the odds are definitely in the former reality TV star's favor.
