need a cheat sheet for betting at the horse track

I happen to be up in Ohio for the weekend and am going to meet some old fraternity brothers at Mountaineer for the West Virginia Derby. I don't go out to the track as much as the casino and I need a quick cheat sheet for how to read the program and what to look for in a winning horse. I know there are only 3 or 4 things that actually matter to pay attention to. Let's hear some tips from the pros.

Get the program, read a local paper. Pick out some horses you like based on recent performances on similar tracks. Than I like to go to the paddock to check out the horses I like. Make sure they look like they're in good form. Not sweating or jittery. A like seeing a horse with his head high and confident.

Bet lightly on the names of horses you like.

Trust me, blind luck will help you more than any cheat sheet will - a cheat sheet will actually cheat you by letting you think you're on to something should you use it and get lucky. You either know horses (takes a heartbreaking lifetime) or you don't - and it's better not to.

don't waste your time going to the paddock. on this unusual day at mountaineer (most of these horses haven't run there) just get the program pick the one with the best avg earnings per start, the one with the best winning percentage this year, the one that shows best gain of ground (lengths) down the stretch last out. some of these will be the same horse so go to the 2nd best in each category until you have 3 horses to box in exacta's. then if you hit one (you will) increase your base bet ensuingly. start with 1.00 exacta box (6.00 bet) when you hit one go to 2.00 exacta boxes and so forth. this will work there today.

*Bet the 5 horse in every race to win
*If there are horses that have names like "opie" or "reload", run for the hills
*Hang out near the dudes who look like total degenerates and when they are tearing up their tickets, scream really loud and pretend like you just hit it big.

Thanks US5, that's pretty much the type of information I was looking for. I know there is a lot of information inside a race book and I was not sure what's important to pay attention to and what is not.

Race tracks are empty the sport is dying and will be bankrupt eventually many races are rigged because jockeys don't make enough money on the purses so they have to play games holding horses back etc. the biggest suckers in the world bet horses they're all broken down broke bums I see it every day in Vegas

Don't bet anything under 3-1. Play the horses with odds noticeably lower than the morning line. GL. Take your favorite 4 numbers and box them every race in .10 supers 2.40. That way you'll have action in every race.

There's no such thing anymore as handicapping horses as the unexpected usually happens in many many races

My dad was an old school horse bettor and he would always bet 1/2 buckle my shoe....exacta and 2/4 because he would always say watch the 2/4 they always move and finish together...so if either are live on the board the other goes into the exacta box

Bet the horse that takes a steaming dump before the call to the gate.
    Works for me.

I love old school horse guys like that.
When I was like 10 I used to go with my dad and sat with people just like your dad.
The stoogies in their mouth, the tote tickets stuffed in their top shirt pocket.......
Sigh.... childhoood memories, I was born and raised in Jersey, Monmouth Park, my Uncle when he lost used to say "This park is screwed on crooked" He also like the say 'the trainers take turns" I never knew what that meant until I asked him, he told me, they trainers world to each other "who's turn is it today"

That was another angle...guys used to say horses were "lighter" or "cleaned out" for the run and are looser

about 10 also with my early trips and my dad said the same thing. Lol. As a former trainer for about 25 years I can promise that it wasn't really like that at all but I totally get it.

    Like you, ahh, the memories.

It's a fun game but a losing game and it's definitely losing steam because the young generation is not interested in it
