Expect a banner SEC year if ESPN’s Football Power Index formula is to be trusted.

The formula recently spit out a preseason ranking that includes six different SEC teams in the Top 10.

Based on a combination of returning starters, average recruiting rankings, head coaching tenure and recent performance, ESPN’s FPI ranked Alabama at No. 2, just behind Ohio State this preseason.

The formula rates an unfathomable five SEC West teams in the Top 10, none of which are preseason co-favorite Auburn. (Some predictions favor Alabama, while others favor the Tide’s in-state rivals.)

Here’s the current Top 25, along with the rest of the SEC:

    1. Ohio State
    2. Alabama
    3. Baylor
    4. TCU
    5. LSU
    6. Georgia
    7. Oregon
    8. Texas A&M
    9. Ole Miss
    10. Arkansas
    11. UCLA
    12. USC
    13. Tennessee
    14. Michigan State
    15. Oklahoma
    16. Stanford
    17. Auburn
    18. Notre Dame
    19. Clemson
    20. Arizona State
    21. Florida State
    22. Georgia Tech
    23. Florida
    24. Virginia Tech
    25. Boise State
    26. Missouri
    31. Mississippi State
    40. South Carolina
    47. Kentucky
    51. Vanderbilt

not a joke but they def dont deserve the #2 ranking

this is based on a tradition of excellence more so than the actual personel on the field.

Reputation can only take you so far though.

I'm biased, but FSU is too low if Alabama is #2. FSU just reloads now.

Tennessee should have a bit of a break out year. 13 seems a little too much though, like when Ole Miss was preseason #4 in 09 when Jevean Sneed was the quarterback. Just a bit too lofty.

Alabama only has 3 offensive returning starters they also lost their QB. I see a 9 win team.

Ohio ST should be almost a "lock" to make it to the playoffs again...absolutely atrocious and weak schedule...un'effin'real!......I realize they got the talent and are defending champions and have a whole shitload of players returning but come on man!...lets see if the selection committee penalizes them for playing "nobodies" like they did to TCU and Baylor last year!...but it will all probably be a moot point because I don't see any way in hell the Buckeyes lose a game...they should go undefeated with that shitty schedule....Well, maybe Frank Beamer's boys can pull off the upset again!...

Yeah I agree the Buckeyes are definitely going undefeated.

But hell... I don't give a damn who you put on their schedule. Put Baylor, BAMA, Texas A&M , LSU and you will get the same results. This team returns pretty much every player from last season except the great Devin Smith (But i hear they have some new guys just as good ready to step up)

and just a few months ago they just str8 up curb stomped Wisconsin, Alabama, and Oregon on neutral fields. I mean they straight put a beat down on all these teams. This year they will be even better. They may go undefeated against the spread too. You can't set a number high enough for them not to cover.

I agree Bear...I see many games on that schedule were Ohio ST will be favored in the 24 - 28 range...however, getting back to my original point..it's still not fair that the Buckeyes will get rewarded for playing a cupcake schedule (regardless of returning players and starters) while other teams (primarily in the SEC) will be beating up on each other and eliminating themselves...and I'm not even an SEC fan...just being a straight shooter and telling it the way it is...who's to say that Baylor and TCU wouldn't have beat Alabama and Oregon as well if they were selected instead of the Buckeyes?!...that is why this system is still flawed...IMO, need to go to at least 8 teams for a legit playoff...

Virginia Tech & Niu are legitimate Ooc games. Ohio States easy schedule problem is because the Big 10 sucks

Preseason polls are notoriously useless outside of maybe the top 2 or 3.

I suspect this year will be no different.

the big ten is just like any other conference...a few good teams, a few bad teams, and the rest mediocre...the problem is Ohio ST dodges the other two good teams in the conference...Nebraska and Wisky...only Sparty might stand in their way and the very first game against the Hokies...Beamer is always tough to beat in Blacksburg.
