Did anyone hear the Beyer speed fig for the Derby?? I cant find it.
you would thinks a simple Google search of
American Pharoah Derby Beyer speed figure would lead to something other than old crap
even if you sort past week or today you get nothing but old articles.
those search features are getting more worthless every day.

The Beyer Speed Figure of 105 for the Derby was the best in the last six years, and these colts will be running much faster as they mature and as they compete at slightly shorter distances.

His thorograph figure was the 2nd best kentucky derby ever. Only Big Brown was better in their opinion.
Figures from Gulfstream need to be taken with a grain of salt when they involve Todd Pletcher runners. He has a very long list of horses who are/were never the same anywhere else.
He took quite a beating (32 whips) and the overall time looks slow, but apparently quite deceiving when reading the
Beyer and ThoroGraph opinions.
No doubt, could be a tired horse, but hoping for the best.
32 whips? Do they not have whip limits in the US?
I think it is up to the stewards as to possible over-use of the whip but I know there are strict rules in places like Australia and Japan
and probably many others. One would think after so many" taps " of the whip the horse will not run any faster and I would be in favor
of some reasonable limit.
Materiality had a terrible trip and still ran a good race.
I think he has a legit chance of he runs in the Preakness.
The thing is, AP ran a 105 in the Derby and yet there were three other horses within five points of him. Which begs the question, was it the horse or was it the track?
Agree but hard to tell. Every horse responds differently to being whipped. Was the first time AP was ever in a dogfight so it could just be Espinoza taking no chances. Have to see how he gallops leading up to Preakness. He ran a huge figure which most horses will react negatively to and have an off race next out. If he is emptied out it will be noticeable . If that kind of race becomes his norm then there hasn't been a horse more deserving of a Triple Crown since Big Brown and Smarty Jones.
I don't think Beyer accounts for ground loss so the fact that AP was ridden like he was much the best (4 wide 1st turn/ 4 wide 2nd turn) paints a different picture.
What did Materiality run in the Derby??
Made a late move to get 6th. And Upstart was dead last.
