Scott Brooks gets the axe at OKC.

    He deserves it.

The Oklahoma City Thunder have fired head coach Scott Brooks, the team announced Wednesday.
Scott Brooks is out after seven seasons as the Oklahoma City Thunder's head coach. Alonzo Adams/USA TODAY Sports

"This is an extremely difficult decision on many levels," general manager Sam Presti said in a statement. "This decision is not a reflection of this past season, but rather an assessment of what we feel is necessary at this point in time in order to continually evolve, progress and sustain. We determined that, in order to stimulate progress and put ourselves in the best position next season and as we looked to the future, a transition of this kind was necessary for the program."

The Thunder missed the playoffs on the final day of the regular season this year, the first time they failed to make the postseason since 2008-09. The team was plagued with injuries, with reigning MVP Kevin Durant playing in only 27 games. Russell Westbrook also missed 15 games, and Serge Ibaka didn't play in the final 18.

"He led us, man," Durant said of Brooks. "He made sure everybody was emotionally stable because we had a lot of guys in and out of the lineup and he kept everybody together. That's what your head coach is supposed to do. I can't really say nothing about it because he did his job. He kept us together."

Brooks told reporters last week that he expected to return as coach.

Brooks had a .620 winning percentage with the team and guided the Thunder to five playoff appearances in seven seasons -- including three of the past four Western Conference finals and the NBA Finals in 2012.

Mark Bryant should be the coach there.

I'm kind of surprised considering all the injuries, and the fact that the two stars seem to like him.

Rumors of Billy Donovan taking over are already swirling.

The injuries aren't his fault. He also didn't give Harden away.

    I put in my resume.

Waiting to hear back from Presti. Donovan doesn't know the area like I do. Fans and players will love me.

Sam Presti is the most overrated GM in professional sports, I'm sick and tired of hearing how great he is. He should've been fired as well.

Here's a guy, over his long tenure, who's traded away more elite NBA talent than any other GM, but got nothing back in return. He's also had to give away numerous first rounders just to dump bad contracts that he prior approved. He's literally gotten killed with every move he's made.

he also literally donated Ray Allen still in his prime which gave the Celtics a title. and then there was Jeff Green and the rights to Eric Bledsoe for peanuts in return.

and all the while going after complete stiffs like Kendrick Perkins, Kevin Martin, Dion Waiters, Jeremy Lamb, Novak, Singler, his list of trash is endless..

This season obviously wasn't his fault but their constant failure to get over the hump in the playoffs in past years was partially on him.

My friend best friend from like third grade, former college roommate, and guy that works for the Thunder told me they had contacted Ollie several days ago.

He didn't know Brooks was getting fired but Ollie seems like a logical choice now given what has happened.

KD and Westbrrok loved him when they were teammates.

This seems like a play to get KD to stay.

maybe, but i would much rather have Donovan if i were an OKC fan. he's light years better than Ollie, just in a completely different class.

and i'd actually be more worried about Westbrook leaving next year.

Hopefully Durant and/or Westbrook bolts and OKC is left with a bunch of stiffs.
