Why Haven't NHL Player Salaries Increased? It's The Only Sport That Doesn't Pay Well

NFL pays well. MLB pays well. NBA pays well.

    And the NHL doesn't.

Who do you blame for this? I mean... I know there's a salary cap and all... but isn't there one in the NFL and also the NBA?

I feel bad for these NHL athletes... what is it... 82 game season... get your head bashed in the boards a few times... a stick in your groin... a puck in your mouth... and not to mention a skate potentially slicing your neck... I'm sorry... I wouldn't want to play 82 games without a solid pay. It's as bad as first place bowling on the PBA tour.

Not many teams sell out games. Too many meaningless games. Playoff format is a joke. Post season too long.

NHL is a joke and nothing will change until Bettman gets replaced, its a great sport but sooo diluted with too many teams, and too many games. Atleast Silver is looking to the future, you couldn't pay me to sit through an NHL game
Oh the irony. Is the nba any different?

This. The product is at an all time high and although it's not big all over the US go to playoff games in the local markets and tell me they don't care.

Kinda like mlb most of the country doesn't give a shit but the atmosphere in sf and KC was unreal.

NHL is a strange breed. I have half season tickets to the Predators this year, and love going to the games in person. I can't stand watching it on TV though. I hear a lot of fans that feel the same way. I wonder if that might be the reason the NHL can't secure better TV deals. I do agree that these athletes deserve just as much money as the athletes in other sports.

You ask some interesting questions; but perhaps you should take a step back and ask yourself what the average salary is for each league. I think you'll find that the the NHL has, in recent years, consistently paid better than the NFL.

Funny thing though, just a couple of years ago buzz was that hockey players got payed too much.

But lets be fair Hockey is much more of a Canadian/European Sport when it comes to fan popularity. NFL,NBA,and MLB are the big American Sports lets be honest, throw in Nascar aswell.

Hockey is an awesome sport to watch...takes a few games to get into it, but it's exciting...nba is a joke and hard to watch for an extended period of time with exception to a few teams like Spurs, Warriors, Grizzlies - who play more team ball.

Hockey is a sport that has it's revenues driven by actual ticket sales. Not like the NFL, which would still turn a profit with empty stadiums.

So that's the business model they work with - focus on the actual people who attend the games.

In 2000, the average teams payroll was 30 million. 12 years later, it was 58 million. 2015 the cap is 68 million with a minimum floor of 51 million.

NHL players have guaranteed contracts. Average NHL salary is guaranteed and averages over 2 million a year.

NBA rosters are a fraction of other sports - so of course dealing with a better TV deal and similar attendance they can pay 30-40% more on average to their talent.

OP is wrong from line 1.

Kane and Crosby are great players. Besides their contracts... who makes great money?

Brady and Manning are amazing NFL QB's.... they play less amount of games and get paid more.

Whoever is matching up the law of avg's in salary between NFL and NHL isn't thinking about the games per year. You can throw those numbers out the window...

I use to be a huge hockey fan from age 10 to like age 26. Once they threw out fighting... I started fading out. It became a pu$$y sport to me. That's what Bettman wanted. Any sport has players who are speedsters, great hands, and some even have the brutes. Well... hockey got rid of the brutes. That's what makes a team... highs and lows. It's not even entertaining anymore.

I'd rather train my kid to be a football player... or a golfer.... or a baseball player. I hung out with the hockey crowd when I was a kid... bitches loved hockey players. Ok that's cool... you can get laid 24/7 with no money in your pocket. It just makes no sense to become a hockey player.

As for that Canadians in this thread... who bashed Americans.... I understand hockey.

And Muldoon that post of "In 2000, the average teams payroll was 30 million. 12 years later, it was 58 million." What sport hasn't increased like that? Cost of living... inflation etc.

My opening post was simple.... the NBA has grown largely...... the NFL has grown immensely.... the MLB after the steroid crap has grown amazingly.... but the NHL.... no one really cares. Hasn't done sh#t.
