Not a slam dunk yet as their are still a few other teams in contention, but this would be a great ballpark to land in for him.
USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports that the Padres "have to be considered favorites" to sign James Shields.
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman has also said the Padres "appear to be among the favorites" for the right-hander. It doesn't come as a surprise, as they've been mentioned as a possible landing spot and Shields makes his home in San Diego. Heyman adds that Shields might have to wind up settling for a contract "perhaps a bit more" that Ervin Santana's $55 million deal. It would be a big drop from his nine-figure asking price from earlier this offseason. The Marlins, Cubs and Blue Jays also have some degree of interest in Shields.
