I don't think he won an MVP when Cubs finished last....and since Banks retired, it's been done 2 different times:

    A-Roid with the Rangers
    Andre Dawson with the Cubs

Look at how baseball players are all trash now their stats mean nothing ever guys doing steroids , ect

Baseball used to be a classy game and I think today's modern player has led to the massive downfall of it

There were no divisions back then. They weren't last, but weren't good. But the bigger thing is that he won BACK-TO-BACK MVP's on bad teams.

His career stats are not huge because he hung on for a long time, but from '55-60 he put up numbers never before seen from a SS. He never played in the minors either. Came straight from the negro leagues.

Before my time so never really got to see him play. But quite a legend though.

Come to think of it, only really know him from his Married w/Children cameos.

    RIP

Per some notes above,...Ernie was NL MVP on Cubs team that tied for last place with the Phillies in 1957.

If Ernie Banks wasn't before your time, I'm surprisd you know how to use a computer or a cell phone.

    Sad news.

Guy played for a fraction of today's league minimum.

Ernie set the trend, but didn't break the mold. Andre Dawson did it too in 87
