    what is a "sharp"

    i hear this term used alot, i take it as someone who is putting alot of money on a game, like an expert of some sort who puts millions on the game, and usually books change the line because of him to get action on the other team?

    is that right

    well some guy on covers named macwestie made some picks a few days ago and hes highly regarded and both his fuckin games were disgustingly bad, he picked Ole Miss

    but thats beyond the point, whats a real definition of a sharp in betting terms

    It's generally someone who the bookmakers respect or someone who shows an edge on their bets over a decent sample size. It doesn't necessarily have to move a line because the book may feel comfortable with their own position or have enough on the other side that they don't feel the need to move it. Studying line moves can lead you to chasing your ass in circles, best way to become a "sharp" is to develop a computer model that has an edge and never post on SBR again.

    95% of us on these boards do not have an edge or are "sharps". There are a few on here that walk among us mortals but the rest of us far outnumber them. If you are looking at a particular poster to determine legit or not, you are going to need a LARGE sample of games and lots of math. God Bless

    but the reason i made this thread is not to find out if anyone is a sharp per say, but i heard that sharp money was coming in on the bobcats(Tonight) and thats why the line keeps fluctiating back and fourth from pick to cavs - 1

    The quick eye test is to look at who a guy bets and the number he got including juice and compare that to pinnacle's closing number. If he does that quite often regardless of record then you probably are looking at a pretty good bettor. If he isn't beating the closing line and is winning then reality is going to set in and he will lose the juice long term.

    Good example would be Twizzle.....he liked TCU vs KSU earlier this year. He bet them very early at -5.5 or -6 cant remember exact number. Game closed a point/ point and a half in his favor hence was a pretty damn good bet. Now was he just firing darts or was that a sharp play? You need a sample size to determine it, btw TCU won quite handily and I had KSU.
