    QB points out the "Mike"?

    Ok, I watch a TON of football, I see it every game. I have sort of vague understanding of what it means, but I'm no sure.
    So, what does it mean when a QB in the NFL barks out the signals and points to player and indentifies him as the as the " Mike"?
    Is this the player that he feels is going to blitz?
    Is it just a way to identify blocking schemes?
    Thx.

    mike LineBacker

    or middle linebacker

    guy that a lead blocker might need to seek out and most likely won't be a blitzing LB in that play

    Doesn't make a difference for most quarterbacks who the mike is, it's only a few that make the defense pay on a regular basis. Aaron Rodgers could be playing 12 mikes tonight. Making the Falcons look like stooges

    Good!
    Always thought it was the player that the QB thinks will blitz, but now I see what you mean.

    No, he's just calling out by first name. "Mike" = Mike Singletary

    Calling out the middle linebacker to help blocking schemes more than anything.....they base their blocking off the middle of the defense

    Mike = Michael Jack Corbin

    QB's always point him out because they know he will rush in and try to play spike the cokk with them and disrupt the passing rhythm.

    The terminology changes with every team. Mike could be a sneaking up safety. Almost all the terminology will mean opposite of actual word. Rocket will be run, high five a screen play, a rocket long would be 2 WR's going deep to clear a middle-range center of field pass. All defenses are taught not to listen to the Offenses words, stick to training and what game film had shown.
    Answer question OP, who the heck knows what mike meant.

    Just calling blocking assignments. Most of the time the center does it. QB may change it if he suspects a blitz or something that the center may not see.
