Ope-ster....love ya man, and usually tend to agree with you, BUT there is a HUGE difference between 'knowing more about baseball' and managing a game well. I am betting than Don knows more about MLB than me, but I can assure you that I could manage a team through a season and/or game than Mattingly....could others here? Probably not the majority, in fact probably less than a handful, but nonetheless, he does not manage the game well.
One of the things that peaves me off about the Majors is the lack of care and attention that managers give to the game and the lack of respect that GM's give to the position of manager. Many managers in the bigs have their position because of their name and what that will mean with the media and at the gate and/or their relationships with the GMs. The thing is, to be a good manager, you need to be strategically sound AND have the respect of the clubhouse.....I just don't see many managers around that have both, BUT if I had to name a few, names like Showalter (a few issues, but manages games the right way), Maddon (the best in the game right now, I rarely, if ever disagree with a move he makes in the field), Gardenhire (my personal favourite) and Mike Scoscia.
I bet there are thousands (and I mean that literally) of managers across North America that can manage a game (and do manage games) better than 50% of the guys managing at the ML level right now and sometimes that makes baseball hard for us purists to watch.

no different than grady little leaving pedro in too long in game 7 of 2003 alcs when he had thrown well over 100 pitches and allowed 3 hits in a row. no one blamed pedro for blowing that big lead because it was obvious he was gassed just like kershaw was.
grady was fired for it and so should mattingly.

The guy was over 100 pitches. If the Dodgers had any bullpen whatsoever all 3 losses in the series could have been avoided.

Kershaw has proven he can't handle the pressure.

The guy is supposed to be the ace and the best player in MLB.
He didn't even pitch 200 innings this year he was prime for this spot, he just choked, like he has every other playoff game he's ever pitched.
Dodger had a bullpen full of garbage.
There is no reason to pull your ace because hes THE ACE.
IT's the fukkin playoffs.
Where stars step up.
Kershaw choked.
Plain and simple.
Stick your pitch counts in your asses. A measely 110 pitches then 3 days rest? Lol, get real.
It's win or go home, you throw until your arm is hanging like a dead piece of meat.
No one is giving any credit to the Cards offense, which is the real story.
They OWN Kershaw. They OWN the Dodgers. They OWN the playoffs period.

Dollars2Donuts knows whats up.
Ned Coletti believes in Mattingly for some reason and has been pretty clear they're at least honoring the 2 years of his contract so nobody in LA is talking about firing him. I can only hope they find some bullpen relief and get rid of Honeycutt this off season because they could be a powerhouse with a few more arms and real coaching in the playoffs.
