I don't think they call penalties on other sports with 5 min left in the game. Have you ever seen a pass interference call in football or holding called on final drive? NEVER

If if you want to dispute a call the Greeks got.....at least that was close. I would not have made that call, but it could have gone either way. This one was so obvious and there is no way, live or replay, that you can deny this one. If you do, then you were just a fan of the other side or had money the other way.

Drop your bias and watch the play again.
dude, I was watching the game with 10 people and all said it was a dive which it was. Even the Holland fans said it was bullshit. I had over 2.5 for the game (post #15 http://www.sportsbookreview.com/forum/soccer-bet...r-weekend.html) so I am happy of course that I won my bet but the Mexican player never touched him (and if he did, it was tiny and definitely not worth a penalty) and the holland player looked like he was shot in the back and dove. No bias here at at. I was cheering for the Netherlands. lol

someone that claims that penalty wasn't the right call has no clue about soccer. next thing you're telling me that foul right before half time shouldn't have been a penalty either.

It sucks the ref blew that for a pk because it was completely accidental and completely unnecessary on the defender's part. The defender clearly caused him to trip so it wasn't a dive but what sucks is the attacker never would have made it to the ball even if he didn't fall.

i totally disagree. I watched it several times now and yes he did step on the tip of his foot but that will never in the history of the world cause anyone to fall down. nevermind that he embellished it as if he was jumping into his pool. If what he did actually caused him to fly through the air like superman then this would happen hundreds of times in any given game. But it doesn't because it was a dive. Like I said earlier, I had over 2.5 in regulation so I am happy to win my bet but its still a bullshit call.

why the hell is the defender's foot there if it wasn't there to foul him? ofcourse the player over-exagerates the fall. it's annoying, it's one of the very little valid arguments that can be made when comparing soccer to other sports: all the theatre. but that does not hide the fact it was a foul, and an incredibly stupid foul of course. robben was going nowhere.

and if you're doing repeats, repeat that right before half-time thing. you can clearly see two fouls being committed after eachother. the mexican defender even breaking his shin bone while doing the 2nd one. no way in hell that shouldn't have been a 100% penalty.

The two sides will never agree on Marquez's foul: A couple of minutes into stoppage time, Arjen Robben took the ball to the Mexico end-line, before cutting back and drawing a foul from Rafa Marquez. Marquez got a yellow card, the Netherlands won a penalty kick. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar buried the attempt as Guillermo Ochoa guessed the wrong way, and the Dutch were through to the quarterfinals. Was it a foul, though? It looked like Robben was falling before contact was made, but Marquez's challenge was late and he enabled Robben to use his leg to sell the dive. The Mexican backline was nipping at Robben's legs and feet all day, and he probably deserved a penalty in the first half. In the end, it was a soft penalty -- but Marquez's challenge was indeed late and he made contact with Robben.

What you do not seem to grasp though is that its IRRELEVANT if it would have caused him to fall or not, what is relevant is WHERE on the pitch it happened and the fact that Marquez has ZERO chance what so ever of reaching the ball, and makes no attempt to do so either, all his action is aimed towards keeping Robben from getting through and advancing.

And when you do this by STEPPING on the foot of the player in question then there is NO discussion what so ever and it's 100% supported by the guidelines that it's a penalty.

Find a new fkn sport to watch moron.

It's a double edged sword, since you can't get a penalty these days by staying on your feet no matter how hard the defenders go at you.

The defender planted his foot, and HARD in the line that the attacker was taking.

If you were with 10 people and they all thought it was a BS call, then you were out with 10 people that just do not know the game. It was nothing if not a penalty. Agreed, Robben goes down like he was shot, but everyone has done that for 100 years in this game.

When Robben made that move there was a chance he would have got to his own chip and when the defender stuck out his leg it made that impossible. It happened in the Penalty Area, it was a PK.

PS, my girlfriend is half Mexican, her mother and grandparents are in Mexico and I was hoping for the Mexican side.....but that was a penalty and I cannot dispute that.

moron? wow. ok we obviously disagree but that's no reason to act like an idiot. Having said that, I don't totally disagree with the first part of what you said, I get it and I have watched a lot of soccer and have no problem with Holland winning the game but just as a pure sports fan, seeing a call like that after bother teams played their hearts out seems like a shame to me. Hey I ain't the only one that feels this way. We agree to disagree is all. That is what make sports fun. Bottomline to me, is the ref could have easily not called it and we could have seen a non controversial winner.

I get it and I see what you see also. Its kinda the same in hockey where the refs put the whistle away and let them play to decide the winner which I would have preferred. Even in football where there's a play that is under video review and even the announcers disagree as to what the call will be. Surely you can at least get where I am coming from. Not that I want or expect you to suddenly agree.

Marquez shouldn't have acted like a moron at such a crucial part of the game. THE END. And Mexico didn't play their hearts out, not even close. They managed to score a goal and then acted like the game was won, stopped playing completly and gave Holland NINE corners and invited Holland back into the game.

    They deserved to lose.

Arjen Robben says sorry for diving but insists he was fouled for Holland's winning penalty against Mexico

Mexico coach Miguel Herrera attacks Arjen Robben for diving and Fifa for choosing a referee from the same continent as Holland for controversial World Cup round of 16 tie

An incandescent Miguel Herrera has accused Holland's Arjen Robben of being a cheat. The Mexico manager also insisted that his team had been eliminated from the World Cup through a refereeing conspiracy.

“Today it was not a wonderful goal that put us out, it was bad decision by the referee, an invented penalty,” he said of the injury-time spotkick that secured a 2-1 win for the Dutch.

“It seems to me that the reason we were eliminated was the man with the whistle. Although their first goal was good and came from a mistake on our part, the game was heading to extra time. But if the referee invents a penalty of that size, you leave the World Cup after circumstances not created by you. And Robben dived three times for penalties that didn’t exist. He should have been cautioned. If you do that to the guy who tries to cheat, then he can’t cheat again.”

It was Robben earning the penalty in the game’s final moments that took Holland through to the quarter-final. The Dutch playmaker admitted that he had dived earlier in the game when the referee waved played on after he had fallen outside the Mexican area – “It is something I shouldn’t have done,” he told Dutch television. But he was clear there was contact from the Mexican captain Rafael Marquez in those dying moments. And replays suggest he was right.

“That one was a penalty,” Robben said. “But the other in the first half was a dive. I must apologise.”

Ok, that last part was actually funny.

The Mexican coach is just coming off as a sore loser.

If the opposite had happened at the other end and Mexico was NOT awarded a PK and then Netherlands went on to win the game in extra time or through PK's he would be shouting from the rooftops that the fix was in and that there should have been a PK.

This kind of stuff is the only reason I don't care for soccer as much as many of the other major sports.

Watched the video again, it was definitely a dive. He may have caused him to get off balance but his next natural step to take would have been with his right leg and there was no reason for him not to take it or even attempt to which he didn't.

Robben is no question a diver but it was a penalty, what he did afterward to call attention to it is irrelevant.

He got called out on it here from a UCL game earlier this year
