Carmelo opts out final year of Knicks contract

I guess he's going to hop on the Heat bandwagon...

Many thought he wouldn't walk away from all that cash on the table with the Knicks....friggin Knicks roster is Shiza....Phil and whatever he thinks he's going to do is going to take a long time and Melo isn't going to hang around and wait

Him, Wade and Lebron...I'm a Heat fan but there aren't enough balls in the gym for those 3 guys.

    Heat look to target Carmelo

    http://espn.go.com/nba/playoffs/2014...ny-free-agency

My initial thought is that it would be a horrible move as Carmelo has seemed to hurt every team he's gone to BUT Lebron may need a guy that isn't scared to take the last shot. Lebron may play better around a ball hog, where he can relax a bit and not always be the first option. If they can somehow get rid of Wade, I think Melo, Lebron and Bosh is a better lineup.

I don't see them getting rid of Wade. We have a Kobe issue on our hand...no way they cut him although they probably should.

Or bring Wade off the bench and limit his minutes/games...

Guys, opting out does not mean he won't re-sign with NY. Everyone knew he would opt out to get a long-term contract, whether in NY or elsewhere. Still think it's 60/40 he stays. If he leaves, it's 90% Bulls.

oh my, I didn't think their was any chance of him leaving New York. Gotta think if his gonna leave its either gonna be for Miami or Chicago. No way he goes to Houston.

I don't see them doing it either but any rational person would. If you want to pay a guy for what he did years ago, why not just give him part ownership. I don't know what the hell the Laker's were thinking. STUPID.

If Wade is really a team player, he'd suggest moving to the bench or a more limited role. Unfortunately, these guys have huge ego's and I'm sure he still thinks he has IT.

Yes it is stupid that we can't make the business decision to cut him...or make him take a pay cut. If he really wants to win, it has to be done. Him and Bosh really.

Silly. So you could say that about every player on every team. The players association does not want this to become a trend and they will get in everyone's ears. Not that some players can't take a little less on occasion, I mean they did that already once. But they really don't want this to become a trend. And personally I think it would be bad for the game. Guys should get what they're worth and let the chips fall where they may. "If they really wanna win" is stupid. If they really wanna win they'll score more points and be the best team. Simple.

Very true BUT by opting out he is testing his true worth. The Knicks could say he's not worth the $23.5 million he'd make next year. They may also say he's not worth the $129 million he can make by resigning with the Knicks over the next 5 years. It's a gamble that you never know how it will shake out. He could get in a career ending car accident tonight and not make another dollar.

I agree that I don't see him going to the Heat. He could only make $58.8 million over 4 years with the Heat versus $95 million going to someone else (like Chicago). That's a lot of money to give up but then again, someone has to agree to pay it. I think his overall worth to a team has been diminished the last few years as teams look at him as a me first guy. I personally think Chicago is the best place, especially if Rose will never come back to 100% BUT I see him staying in NY because they will over pay him to resign and he seems to be money motivated. It should be very interesting to see what happens.

NBA players really don't want to create an NFL contract situation...

Unless the Bulls dump Taj Gibson, as I understand it the Bulls can amnesty Boozer and dump Dunleavy which would give them about 17 per year to worth with. And no team besides NY can give him more than 4 years. So Chicago would likely be something like 4/68.

This is why I want him to go to Chicago. Chicago fans all seem to welcome him coming and don't spew any hate towards him. Other fans say they don't need him or some other nonsense. I think Melo would be a perfect fit in Chicago, he's needs a defensive minded team to take the pressure off of him doing everything and Chicago needs a scorer.

He probably stays in NY if they can make something happen, he just needs to wait one more year for the cap room. If not, Chicago it is.

Melo's not coming to Miami, they would all have to take massive pay cuts. My guess is he stays in NY, if he does leave, I think Chicago would be a logical choice.

If he loves money more than winning a ring he stays in ny for the Max contract.

If he wants to win a ring more than he wants money then he heads to Chicago
