I once read years ago that the top 20 teams in the NFL generate more money than the entire world of soccer. I don't know if that is true today though.

View my link above, that is just profit of sports leagues and it makes almost twice as much as the highest level of soccer in Europe.

i know it was already answered but let me be more specific and then let's close this thread:

the majority of the world is 2nd and 3rd world, much poorer than 1st world.

the children and their parents cannot afford all of the equipment necessary to play other sports,

but to play soccer all you need is a ball, and a couple of items like big rocks or garments (to be used as the goalposts)

then any large dirt lot will do, don't even need grass,

the kids are plentiful so 11 on 11 is easy to find,

it is literally the easiest sport to subsidize with the basic things i mentioned.

kids start at age 3, 4, in most countries around the world.

now we can close out this question forever, yes?

Lol that would mean 97% of the worlds population followed premiere league. Pretty impressive considering only about 40% of households in the world have a TV/internet access.

How can you compare the Premier League, which is one of a handful of big soccer leagues to the NFL,which has no rival? If a super league of all the big teams in europe was created it would shit all over the NFL in terms of making money.

Even if you look at it through revenue the NFL makes just as much as the top 3 leagues in Europe. The NFL is the King of sports. No question about that. 3rd world soccer has nothing on the USA!!

Guys it's apples and oranges ..... Soccer(football as we call it) is a culture for us. We have our clubs and we have our countries.... Soccer will always rule because of the country factor. Clubs also join in tournaments where the world plays the rest of the world. I'm a huge fan of U.S sports but the fact will remain that as a sports lover when my country plays(like rugby as well) there's no better thing!!! Let's not argue about why soccer is bigger, it just is and always will be. Enjoy the World Cup for what it is, celebration of countries coking together with their best to win the most prestigious tournament in history

According to what I just read via Google, the main reason is that qualification takes too long.

The affordability argument is just plain stupid. If it is so easy to make a football using a rock, how hard is to make a bat and a ball out of some wood and a rock? Or they could use the legbone from the animal they hunted and ate for dinner last night as bat.

Agreed and also because the club level fixtures, cups and tournaments keep the schedule busy. Also the prestige like the Olympics keeps a high standard compared to something won every year. Anyways the point is that it's always been and always will be the greatest sport ever, more people play it than any other sport. Nuff said

The difference between football to. Lot of sports is you can believe you can come from nowhere and win something. My club hull city where in the 4th division in England in 2004. Now look at us. Fa cup final.

Franchising kills that thrill in America. I do follow American football and go to wembley every year but it's missing relegation.

The fact more people play it doesn't make it the greatest sport ever. My little nephews will play soccer until they are old enough to play real sports. It's a sport for primitive people.

Every country/race has a chance to play.

You can't say that about most sports. The average height human can be a star.

More people play it because it is easiest to do with the least amount of requirements. You can practice soccer by yourself. It is the most popular sport because anyone can go into their backyard with a ball and be an athlete, so they can relate to it much easier.

Playing sports like football, baseball, hockey, etc take much more preparations to even start playing.
