Estrada was actually ridiculous pitching on the road last season, to the tune of a 2.07 era. And Peavy was much better at home. Over three starts at Fenway he allowed a .195 BAA. Plus neither team has seen much of either pitcher at all. I'm thinking there is some value in the under 8.5 here...

    Either way, GO SOX!

Anything could happen. But God do I like my chances with the defending champs opening up at home vs a NL team, and the Brewers at that.
Maybe a low scoring game, but how can one go against the sox with confidence here. Would be shtty to honor the champs and then have them lose to the Brewers. A lot of pride to play for today

Hope someone throws a syringe at Braun!

I am on bored I think this line is -200+ if this game takes place any other time of the year. Obviously Peavy is better pitcher. Brewers bats have been DEAD. Used to playing indoors now going to Boston. I don't know how weather is but it is damp and freezing here in North Jersey. Peavy 7-0 with a sub 2.5 era last year. I think this one is easy.

you're referring to his home record last year, I guess. Keep in mind he was only with Boston for part of the season.

4 starts at Fenway during the regular season, that's it.

Where he really excelled last year was at US Cellular. 5-0, 2.59 ERA, 1.008 WHIP in six starts

I live in the Boston area, the game starts in about 2.5 hours: Brilliant sunshine and just about 50 degrees, no wind and no rain for the game. Good enough for this time of year around here. Compared to the winter we had this is like summer. BOL

Correct yis. Small sample size for Boston but very solid there. Was referring more to being a guy feeding off of a home crowd rather than the ballpark. Guy has always been better with the crowd. His 1st two years he was 18-18 with an era in the 4.25 range...at home in those years 7-4 with a 2.56 and a 3.57. 7-3 2.56 in 2004. 7-3 2.82 in 2005. In a rough 11-14 4.09 2006 at home he was still 6-7 with a 3.75. In 2007 9-5 with a 2.51. In 2008 5-5 with a 1.74. In 2009 6-4 with a 3.32. In 2010 his first full year in Chi he was a 4.63 pitcher and 3.91 at home. His terrible 2011 he did struggle at home with a crazy 6.11 mark. But the last two years produced 6-4 and 7-0 with 3.10 and 2.73 at home while having above 4 ERAs on the road. Just seems he is better with a crowd.

Estrada to me is benefiting from playing in the NL Central. The hitting is pretty weak overall. He owns a 1-5 record vs AL opponents and struggled vs Boston, the Angels, Minnesota (twice), got rocked by Oakland, and TB got to him in releif. He pitched well vs Texas. It's just a different ball game against this line up 1-9 with constant pressure and threats. Plus with the Brewers struggling to score a lot will fall on his shoulders.

    re: peavy at home

his years with San Diego was more because of the ballpark

Maybe he is better at home but his home ERA was always going to be lower because the ball doesn't carry in San Diego. If you look at home/road splits for pitchers on West Coast teams, they'll almost always be better at home.

No, defending champions have not won 9 straight home openers. I checked this stat this morning and by year 5 I was 4-1 and I stopped checking. I believe the Cards lost a home opener after they won the ship. However Boston won their opener 8-1 after the ring ceremony of their last home opener.

Isn't this really equivalent to a coin landing on heads 7 times in a row? obviously the defending ws champs are normally favored starting the next yr so more likely they win than a coin flip but are lined as such, just don't think that stat holds much if any relevance.. No play for me so gl

Well yea if it was same as coin flip it wouldn't be -150, just saying that if every defending champ since the beginning of time won their home opener it still would have no effect on the outcome of this particular gm. The whole past history doesn't guarantee future results thing..
