Why start your so called #1 ace pitcher on opening day automatically ?

Maybe your so called #4 guy matches up well against the opponent and your #1 matches up well in game 4 against the next opponent and should win that game easily !

In a 162 game season the rotation is going to get out of sync and #1's will face #5's all the time.

It's like the closer BS where the closer only pitches the 9th and not when most needed, like in a jam in the 7th.

Set your rotation for the playoffs ( if you get there) not game 1, pitch who matches up best if the opponent is going to go by rank/reputation. Toss your rookie against the ace if you think you are overmatched and let your ace blow away a weaker pitcher.....maybe your rookie pitches good and wins ?

its all an ego trip for these overpaid guys to get that 1st day start or save chance. You don't even know who your ace is until midseason in many cases.

The sooner he gets his first start, the sooner he gets his second start

I don't think any manager is going to want to hold his best pitcher out of the entire first series because of a perceived bad matchup

exactly, if you don't start him then need him in a real important game down the line he might not be ready

Baseball is the only sport where a fan can be a manager and still win the game.

none of those games in the first half of the season are ever considered real important. A win is a win but a mgr isn't going to have his closer pitch a 5 out save early on....when the closer could easily do it.

the rotation dont mean shit until the post season.

You dont get huge dog prices until late in the season anyway. Who is the ace starter on the NYY anyway ? CC by default ( and he had a good ST), but I think at the end of the season it would be Tanaka, Nova, then CC...if they make the playoffs ?

Is Lincecum an ace ? Many other guys are iffy Most teams have two or more guys that could be considered as the ace on opening day....it's who is there in Oct that matters. If a team has one really stud pitcher, why not throw your #5 against him and throw #1 in game 2 ? You might get lucky and win all 3 games !

It's a sign of respect. Has nothing to do about winning the game.

Tradition. Respect. Agreed. Unless you're Houston and then you're always starting a #5 on every day.

that is it ! Why do these guys need this respect ? Let the mgr manage and do what you are told as a player. You ( player) play the position I assign you to and bat where I say In the order ( as MGR). It should be about winning the game not playing to egos.

You would last about a week before your "brand" of managing would probably lose the clubhouse

Home openers are priced premium and normally will be sold out...those fans paid to watch aces pitch. NTL not a bad strategy not playing them.

Wtf is going on in this thread. The first guy you start is going to get the most starts over the course of the season. Of course you want that to be your best pitcher. You're going to wait 4 days to start your ace because you dont like the "matchup"? And start lesser quality pitchers in the first series of the season?

This is not about respect or tradition its about common fukkin sense.

Because they want to start the season with a win. Baseball is a game of confidence and momentum.

They want to start the season off right

Everyone is bringing respect and pleasing the crowd into the equation, but it all comes down to what DrStale said. If your team is involved in a tight race in September/October, getting the aces as many starts as possible becomes paramount.
