You bet into mutual pools so playing against all the other bettors not vs the book like in other sports.

So you have all the money bet to win in one pool, money bet to place in another pool, money bet on exactas another pool,show,trifecta,superfecta,etc...

Then the winning tickets in their respective pool get divided among the winning tickets.

So if there is 200k bet into the exacta pool and 2 long shots finish 1st and 2nd.There may be only a couple hundred winning tickets that pay $830 for every $2 bet.If 2 favorites finish top 2 most exactas pay around $20.

When you get into the harder options like Pick 6 and Superfecta one ticket might scoop the whole pool but the swings are massive.

    Very good explanation Mike

For each race they take about 20% of the money bet out for commission, commission varies track to track but that's generally the number. So let's just say to make it easy there is 1000 dollars bet on a race for a typical win bet. We will make the race have only 5 horses, again just to make it easier to understand.

1000 bet in this imaginary race....200 goes to track....so 800 is paid to people who picked the winner

This is total Amount bet on horse. And. Odds to win along side it

    horse 1. 100. 7-1
    horse. 2. 400. 1-1
    horse 3 200. 3-1
    horse 4. 80. 9-1
    horse 5. 20. 39-1

So any bet on a horse will pay the odds listed alongside the horse if it wins. You can see the total that could be collected regardless of which horse wins would be exactly 800.

The exact principles apply for all all races, pick 3's , etc etc . House Takes cut, remainder paid to winners.

JJ is absolutely right. nothing tougher then horse racing. You have to look at it this way, house cut is 20% typical race days inside info at track is worth another 10%. I am not taking about " fixes or shady stuff" I am talking about just people that work at the track or are there every morning clocking the horse workouts. These people know who is training well, who is training poor, who is prepped and ready to fire for this particular race or who is just trying to just get "tightened up" for a big effort next out. So 30 bucks out of every 100 are already out of your reach before you make a bet.

thanks guys, So its better to stick to venues that have a lot of people so the payouts are better NY cali like JJ said. Also is the easiest bet to start with just the winner? I don't fully understand trifecta, exacta, etc....

Mitchel. Here is a perfect example of how this shit works... A year back I bet 20 on a favor to win... they did win... I want to the window to collect for my ticket.. and the fukks. Paid me 19.25

Horse racing is the biggest scam next to the lottery

You probably got paid 39.25 numb nuts.

I wouldn't call it a scam. It's basically playing ring games of poker with the house taking a rake and giving away money to the winners.

Exacta needs the first two horses and trifectas need the first three. For simplicity start with wins.

Unless you live in japan that didn't happen, I won't bother explaining how unless asked. Also it happened about three times in the 100+ year history of racing. Your ticket would have been worth more on EBAY.

yes JJ is right big tracks are better, less shady, bigger money pools available. Win bets are simplest or betting a horse win place show.

when betting horses they normally come and go into form and one must be able to read and understand past performace charts in order to handicap. Speed and (current) form is most important. Also horse must fit the race. There is a large series of moves and cover horses within horse racing and all must be learned.

I do have a foul proof system not requiring handicapping that could be done for unlimited funds.

Your major sports are seeing a decline in attendance as well. It is a sign of the times. People are watching games from home on their 70" tvs where they can flip channels and watch multiple games at once rather than getting gouged by $12 beers etc...

People are playing horses from home. The nearest track to me is probably over 2 hours away, maybe closer to 3.

I read an article recently that said the handles in horse racing took a hit in 2008 like everything else, but have rebounded and are actually currently pretty strong. I will try to see if I can find it.

Someone posted a story just a week or so back chronicling a sports book manager... asking him what the % was of winners long term in ponys... He said 90% are easy lifetime losers.. 9% are lifetime losers... 1% are losers

Don't get me started with " Sports Book Managers" and horse racing.

Long story short, when you want to bet a horse at higher odds, they can and in my case, did, restrict the amount of the wager. In many cases they would only take a 2.00 bet and this was Vegas.

This was before offshore but my point is, if you want to listen to a guy like this, be my guest.

While it is no easy feet and takes a tremendous amount of dedication to make a worth while profit playing the horses it can be done and I know several from my home track that did and too my knowledge still do.

It takes a lot of thought and a lot of your time, but then again, making money with money, always does.

Most gamblers have neither the drive nor the temperament to make a living there.

But that is most, certainly not all.

    Best of luck.

stay away from horse betting because 100 percent you can't win . I use to bet the horses for over 30 year's i'm a harness better I stopped going over 8 year's ago I hit a tri at the biggest harness track there is the Meadowlands and on the biggest day the hambletonion. I could have spelled that wrong but anyway. you wait for a tri like this there was a horse called MR MUSCLEMAN never off the ticket well I never used him. before the race he was 13-0 never lost a race and he went off 1-5 or 2-5 real big chalk the winner went off at 12-1/ 2 place went off 30-1 and 3 place went off at 36 to 1 . and outside number horses 6-9-8 there was millions in the tri pool I thought the tri would pay at least 20.000 the MF paid 1.200 and I got half because I had the tri key the MF crooks

    Dil,

i am familiar with the hambletonian and the super horse Mr. Muscleman, retired with over 3.5 million in earnings. That exacta should have paid more then your triple paid, that is a disgrace. I remember when the all time leading rider with over 15000 career wins was caught race fixing. He was actually caught with the sports betting syndicate the koshers, or bagel boys as some people called them out east. I am sure some guys like fishhead might remember what happened, It is a pretty amazing story.

james like you said the per should have paid more then my tri . I still have the ticket the tri paid over 1.200 it was 1.206 so I got half and then I had to pay taxes I almost had an brain Aneurysm when I seen that payoff. the crazy thing about this tri the super with MR MUSCLEMEN getting 4 paid over 14,000 such crooks it's unreal. so what the track is telling me that almost everybody had that tri which i would bet everything that I own not more then 12 gambler's had that tri in the world. and with outside numbers if it was 123 a lot of gamblers play the inside post but I had all outside numbers my god I still can't believe it I know what the track done with the money they kept it I have never been back

I live on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. wish that I had a video because then I could prove that he came at me. I don't like to fight, only if I have to. This guy Rob comes at me, I said I didn't want to fight him 2 times before punched. This has screwed me over so bad. I don't have time to be going to court. My work season starts real soon and I don't like to miss days. I didn't get arrested because cops have to see it to arrest you unless it is domestic. They gave me a summons though. BS

Im lucky I live near 2 tracks Thistledown and Northfield Park about 10 min either direction and now both have casinos now but only slots. The track oart in both are slow without live racing but rather go to the track live and place bets instead of waiting from online when I can cash tickets whenever I want.
