What is your Mount Rushmore of awful college basketball coaches

Not terrible in terms of wins/losses or postseason apperances, but more on the lines of coaches who constantly underachieve and do less with more, not getting the most out of their players. Coaches who if they were any good at coaching, would do far better than what they have done.

    Mine:

    Scott Drew
    Travis Ford
    Mark Gottfried
    Leonard Hamilton

If were talking in-game, i agree. But recruiting is a huge part, and scott drew can recruit.

Couldn't agree more. Also think you gotta put John Thompson III on there for sure. I'd throw Jamie Dixon in there too. And Jay Wright is making a case.

I don't watch enough Ok St to know how much Ford sucks, though apparently this is a very common thought in the public. I think Scott Drew's too young to really be judged just yet and I've never thought Leonard Hamilton has really had all that great of talent to work with. I think his job at FSU the last 4-5 years has actually been pretty good. Gottfried is the coach of my alma mater and we all have a love hate relationship with him. He's a fantastic recruiter and has brought in some top talent but he can't seem to get that talent to play well together. Lots of chemistry issues the last two years. And he doesn't seem to know how to coach either x/o's or effort on the defensive end. At the same time, it's hard to do much in the ACC with Duke/UNC (and now Cuse and soon L'ville) entrenched at the top of the mountain. I hope that in five years once Coach K/Roy Williams/Boeheim/Pitino have all retired Gott will have figured out what it takes to be a perennial contender. If he hasn't he will get shown the door.

Romar, JT3, Rick Barnes, and Coach Calipitiful(can outrecruit everybody and outcoach nobody). 1 title and 50 lottery picks. You do the math.

Agree, which is not a popular sentiment to the average college basketball fan. He's underachieved a hell of a lot more than overachieved in his career -- mostly because he's an awful in-game coach.

I will never forget when UNC lost to Kansas in the 2012 Elite Eight and poor Roy was asked in the post game presser about KU confounding Heels with zone down the stretch and that dumbfuck said it wasn't a big deal because KU only played zone for a couple of possessions. Apparently, no one on the UNC bench noticed. Fkn inexcusable. I wouldn't put up with that shit in my rec league games. No excuse for playing dumb.

Calipari is awful, agreed. Some UK apologist will come in here and tell us we're idiots and know nothing about hoops for not appreciating Cal's greatness in 3, 2, 1....

You had me at Scott Drew.

Roy Williams is a fantastic inclusion in this discussion. Any slap dikk could win 20-25 games with the auto recruiting UNC gets. A good coach would have owned the NCAAs with the talent he's had to work with.

All you guys wanna do is whine and piss and moan when you lose your bets and point the finger at someone so naturally you blame the coach.

God forbid you ever just admit to being on the wrong side of a bet.

I used to respect Roy Williams when I was a kid and he was at KU. But the older I get and the more the UNC cheating/academic fraud scandal unfolds over there and the more losing press conferences he gives where he says things like "I don't have any answers for what happened tonight" the more and more I'm convinced he's the greatest coaching fraud in the history of sports. Of course I'm not allowed to say that because I'm an NC State alum and we're all "delusional mouth-breathers" but I can't think of one coach who's done less with more than Roy Williams. Especially when it's now known that Roy's players never even had to worry with going to class.

Take away 2002-2003 and it's Tom Crean. Whatever level of talent he has they play below expectations.

i live in pittsburgh, not a pitt fan, but dixons fanbase seems to love him. i dont really like his style of play but he gets iffy talent and goes to the tournament just about every season. This season, I dont see a ncaa appearance in their future. I have come to the conclusion he will never actually win anything, but I wouldnt say hes an awful coach, you could say he isnt a great recruiter.

Bobby Knight's kid whatever his name is.
    Mike Jarvis when he coached.
John Thompson Sr. when he coached. Sans Patrick Ewing he was a complete dud.

How about that guy from Syracuse or does he get a pass. Aren't Boeheim teams a repeated let down every year? Basically, anyone not named Pitino, Krzyzewski? I don't disagree. But not every coach sucks. Some are in better suited situations where they can continuously flourish. Billy G done a shit job at UK but I'm not sure it was all to do with being a bad coach. The man just had a helluva run in the prior years to UK. If a guy gets fired from two different schools within 5 years then, yeah he probably isn't a good coach....but if he has good success at one place and then leaves for another, and the success doesn't carry over, does that mean he's a bad coach? Tom Crean for instance.
