Young was drafted by TB (Young's record 3-16 in 19 games) in 84 he was 23 years old & some people remember the usfl
He was not 31 when he started as a pro.

    Eli 2 > Steve Young 1

why? because young ran into Favre and his best green bay teams? or the cowboys in the last couple years of their heyday?

edit for Nasher: I was responding to what slacker00 posted... not saying Eli is better than Young. He said it takes a higher caliber to get 2, so I posted Eli with his 2 rings vs Young with his 1. I even had the wacko icon posted...pay attention man.

So young is an elite top 5 qb because he couldn't beat guys who are not on most peoples' lists?

I think that Super Bowl rings can be an indicator for an elite QB but not always necessary. The Barry Sanders argument is really the biggest counterpoint to "the most rings = best players" argument. Sanders was a beast nobody will deny, and if he was on a better team he would've picked up a couple rings himself. If I recall this was also the problem with Archie Manning in that he played on a lot of bad teams but was a good player himself.

I'm not talking about RB, we are talking about QB. Besides, Jim Brown has an NFL title.

As for Steve Young being a backup for half his career, is that part of what it means to be great?

Steve Revolutionized the position... paved the way for "accurate pocket/running qb's he was able to disect a play, stay in the pocket and take off when the defense breaks down.... Russell Wilson reminds me alot of how Steve played.

    Here we go again.
Steve Young was in the NFL for 13 seasons, he was drafted by one of the shittiest, if not the shittiest teams ever, that would be Tampa Bay of the mid 80's.
Young was a backup rookie his first year, got virtually no playing time in 1985.
His second year at Tampa Bay he had no offensive line, no running back, no receivers while playing for what many call the worst team in modern NFL history
Then Young goes to the 49'ers where he backed up Joe Montana for 4 1/2 years, saw very limited action.

    OK, pay attention now.

In 1992 Young became the 49'er regular everyday starting QB.
Remained their regular everyday starting QB until 1998.

In those seven years when Young was the regular season starting QB for the 49'ers Young did this:
Made the pro bowl each and every season. That's 7 for 7 if you are keeping score at home.
Was all pro three times in seven years.
Was league MVP twice, won a Super Bowl and while doing so was Super Bowl MVP

How can you possibly tell me, with a straight face Eli, because the Giants won one more championship with Eli as QB than Young did with his team?

Young led the league in completion pct 5 out of those 7 years.
Young led the league in TD passes 4 times.
Twice he led the league in the best interception rate (as in lowest) percentage. (How's Eli's interception rate, pretty damn shitty, huh?)
For the love of God man, I can go on and on, Young led the league in 10 different offensive categories in in multiple years

This is what Eli has led the league in
Most interceptions thrown in a season, three times.
    That's it.

Eli could not both carry nor sniff Young's jock.

I was posting on Young's behalf...

I was responding to a guy who said 2 rings takes a higher caliber over one ring. So I compared Eli who has 2, to Young... who has 1. Then made a very brief argument for Young. I was kind of asking him if he thinks Eli is a better overall QB compared to Young.

Gonna shorten the list and just go with the 2 coolest Qb's ever and the guys i wanna go out drinking with after the gm.

    1. Kenny "Snake" Stabler
    2. Jim "Mad mac" Mcmahon

Both have a ring and may not hold any passing records but im sure they slammed more beer, smashed more ass, and had a better time than anyone else mentioned in their heyday.

Steve Young should not be dismissed lightly because he only has 1 ring after all Ted Williams had 1 less ring than Young. Young maybe not top 5 but certainly in the discussion.

Doug Williams actually has the same # of rings as Steve Young. Identical playoff win % also.
